About the Role

On behalf of AWE, we are looking for an Engineering Manager (Inside IR35) for a 12 month hybrid contract based in Burghfield. What if you could work on something that you can’t test… but cannot afford to fail? Some challenge. That’s exactly what the team of over 6,500 people at AWE do every day delivering important work, in support of the most important mission – keeping the nation safe. AWE plays a crucial role in national nuclear security. Their role in nuclear deterrence and their specialist technical assistance to nuclear threat reduction is vital in the defence against the most serious threats faced by the UK. Working to support the defence of our country, AWE has a clear mission to keep everyone, the environment, their products and information, sites, and everything around them, safe and secure. As an Engineering Manager, your main responsibilities will be to: Assess the suitability of engineering design resources (both internal and external to AWE) to execute facility design. Ensure adequate competency and competency records. Lead, drive, communicate and deliver Facility Designs, with due regard to safety, quality, schedule, cost effectiveness and lifetime value for money. Maintain oversight of the facility design as it develops via routine reviews. Deliver, to the SEM, design solutions that meet business needs, functional performance, through life performance and is licensable and deliverable. Manage the Design Intent and Design Information Configuration from inception through to project handover. Provide functional support in identifying and implementing change, development and improvement. Essential: Significant experience delivering engineering or infrastructure programmes in highly regulated environments, ensuring compliance with stringent safety, security, and quality requirements. Proven capability in leading and contributing to technical design reviews, ensuring engineering solutions are robust, compliant, and aligned with established governance frameworks. Solid understanding of regulatory frameworks and assurance processes, with the ability to ensure engineering outputs meet organisational and industry standards. DV Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be willing & eligible to undergo checks. Please note, due to the exceptional requirements of this position (short-term nature of this role and speed at which we require a postholder in situ) preference may be given to candidates who meet all of the essential criteria and hold active security clearance. Desirable: Background in construction or major‑build programmes, particularly where engineering governance, configuration management, and design assurance are central to programme success. Experience working within electrical engineering environments or across multidisciplinary engineering teams, ensuring effective integration of mechanical, electrical, civil and systems‑engineering inputs, and maintaining full compliance with engineering governance, safety requirements and design‑assurance processes.
