SEMH Teaching Assistant – Specialist SEMH School

We are seeking a dedicated, resilient, and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEMH secondary school in Maidstone on a full-time basis, starting immediately.
This role is ideal for someone with a strong interest in supporting young people with social, emotional, and mental health needs, who can build positive relationships and support pupils to engage successfully with learning.
The Role
As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils who present with a range of social, emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs. Support may be delivered on a 1:1 basis or within small group settings, both in and out of the classroom.
You will work closely with teaching staff, therapists, and pastoral teams to provide consistent support and help pupils regulate emotions, manage behaviour, and develop both academically and socially.
Pupil Needs May Include
SEMH (Social, Emotional & Mental Health needs)
Challenging behaviour
Emotional regulation and attachment needs
Anxiety, low self-esteem, or trauma-related behaviours
Difficulty accessing mainstream education
Additional needs such as ASD or ADHD (in some cases)
Key Responsibilities
Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis or in small groups
Assisting with emotional regulation and behaviour management
Supporting pupils to access learning and complete tasks
Promoting positive behaviour and coping strategies
Assisting the class teacher with lesson delivery and classroom support
Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils
Implementing behaviour support and support plans
Providing feedback to teachers and pastoral staff
The Ideal Candidate
Experience working with SEMH, SEN, or challenging behaviour (desirable)
Calm, patient, and resilient approach
Strong behaviour management skills
Able to work effectively with individuals and small groups
Passionate about supporting vulnerable young people
Reliable and available to start immediately
