We look forward to meeting you.   The Role Outside machinists are responsible for installing, grooming, testing, and repairing a ship's major mechanical components and systems and work can occur on commercial or naval ships in various stages of new construction, overhaul, or repair. Ship components that are part of this work can include anything from steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults and weapons systems, periscopes to laundry, food service, or refrigeration equipment.   Outside machinists operate a wide variety of tools and machinery ranging from wrenches and screwdrivers to complex and sophisticated equipment such as saws, drill presses, optical equipment, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, and lathes.   If you have experience* related to the following, you might be a good fit for this job. Experience in mechanical concepts (e.g., Automotive Repair, Plant Maintenance, Machinery Installation/Repair) or relevant tools or techniques. Experience with HVAC systems or parts   Must Have Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S. Candidates must be able to: Climb ladders and work at extreme heights. Work in small, tight, or confined spaces. Kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis. Lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more Work while repeatedly reaching overhead. Work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions. Work in areas with radiation. Take and pass a respirator fit test. Work assigned shift as production needs. Take and pass a Physical Agility Test. *Note that if you have 5 or more years of job-related experience and/or technical/vocational school training, you should apply for the X43-Outside Machinist Experienced job posting. Nice to Have Prior Mechanical experience such as Automotive Repair, Plant Maintenance, Machinery Installation/Repair is a plus. Successful completion of a technical/vocational program in Machining, Diesel Technology, Automotive, HVAC, Mechanical.
