Position Focus:
The Yale CryoEM Resource (YCR) is a university-wide cryo-electron microscopy facility with three sites across Yale’s campuses: Science Hill, the Yale School of Medicine, and West Campus. YCR houses a comprehensive suite of transmission electron microscopes supporting a wide range of applications, including TEM characterization, single-particle analysis, cryo-electron tomography, and microcrystal electron diffraction. The facility also includes significant expansion space with unoccupied EM rooms intended for future instruments, offering strong capacity for growth and collaboration. As a multi-user facility, YCR works closely with users at Yale as well as with external academic and industry users.
We invite applications for a CryoEM Specialist to join the YCR team. Reporting to the YCR Managing Director, the specialist will work with users across Yale and with external academic and industry users. The position is primarily based at the Science Hill site, with activities at the Yale School of Medicine and West Campus as needed. Key responsibilities include user training, cryoEM service delivery, guidance in experimental design, sample preparation, data collection, and image analysis, as well as contributing to reliable instrument operation, service coordination, and safety compliance across the YCR.
Required Skills and Abilities
1.Demonstrated expertise in cryoEM, including experimental design, sample preparation, screening, data collection, data analysis, and scientific troubleshooting.
2.Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with scientists from a wide range of backgrounds.
3.Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
4.Project management: strong organizational and project management skills to support facility operations.
5.Technical knowledge: in-depth understanding of relevant research techniques and methodologies.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills
Ph.D. or equivalent in biology, chemistry, physics, biophysics, structural biology or a closely related field.
Principal Responsibilities
1. User Training: Provide advanced training and guidance to users of the research core.
2. Experiment Support: Collaborate with researchers on experimental design, execution, data analysis, and troubleshooting within the research core.
3. Facility/Instrument Support: Manage and oversee research projects within the research core.
4. Technique Development: Lead the implementation and optimization of advanced techniques and methodologies and develop standard operating procedures for research core services.
5. Data Analysis/Interpretation: Analyze and interpret complex scientific data, generating meaningful insights and recommendations.
6. Equipment Procurement: Assist in the selection, acquisition, and maintenance of research core equipment.
7. Professional Development: Stay updated with emerging research trends and technologies. Participate in professional development activities and scientific conferences.
8. Scientific Participation: Contribute scientific data for manuscript preparation and grant proposals
9. Staff Training and Mentoring: Contribute to the training and mentoring of junior staff members.
10. Vendor Relations: Manage vendor relationships, negotiates contracts, and evaluates new technologies for optimal procurement processes.
11. Education and Outreach: Contribute to education and outreach activities within the core, including tours, events, etc.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of skills, education, and experience.
