Legal tech is a big topic that will play a role in the future careers of legal professionals. Trainees are our lawyers of the future, so it is important to explore tech and encourage innovation from the very start of their careers as it plays a pivotal and growing role in the delivery of legal services.
Over the last six months, our second-year trainees have been taking part in our Legal Technology and Innovation programme. This modular programme enables our trainees to explore the world of legal tech, develop sector focused client solutions and work collaboratively to deliver a group pitch in a 'Dragons Den' style setting. The aim of the programme is to enrich knowledge, understanding and skills around technology and innovation in legal services.
We asked a couple of our trainees how they found the programme and what they gained from the experience. Plus we hear what our judging panel thought!
Harry Jupp, Trainee Solicitor
Over the past six months I have gained a valuable insight into how technology can be applied within the legal industry to improve client services. I’ve learnt about the management of disruptive technologies and improved my understanding of design thinking and how this can translate into technological solutions for clients.
My highlight was having the opportunity to speak to a number of colleagues across the firm, from the Private Equity sector to the Business Development team, discussing potential barriers clients face, our ideas and how these can develop into pragmatic and effective solutions. This has given me a first-hand experience on how a legal tech solution can be pitched, funded and integrated within the firm and subsequently advertised to clients.
This course has enabled me to think critically about the application of technology in legal practice, and presenting our idea has helped improve my communication and presentation skills, which will be hugely valuable for both my role as a trainee and as I develop throughout my career
