About the Role

You’ve studied behaviour, development, and how people think. Now imagine seeing it play out in real time, in a classroom where your support genuinely changes a child’s day. We’re working with a group of primary schools in Gateshead who are looking for a Psychology graduate to join them as a SEND Teaching Assistant. If you’re searching for graduate jobs in schools, exploring Teaching Assistant jobs in Gateshead, or looking for meaningful SEND support jobs in Gateshead, this is a role where everything you’ve learned starts to make sense. You won’t just be observing, you’ll be involved, building relationships, supporting learning, and helping children navigate school in a way that works for them. Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 3:30pm Contract: Term-time only, giving you structure and balance What your day will really look like: You’ll arrive just before the school day starts, grabbing a quick coffee while checking in with the teacher about the plan for the day. As pupils come in, you’ll be one of the first friendly faces they see, helping them settle and feel ready. Throughout the day, you’ll: • Work 1:1 with a pupil who needs extra support, helping them stay engaged • Break tasks down so learning feels achievable, not overwhelming • Spot early signs of frustration and calmly support emotional regulation • Encourage small wins, a completed task, a moment of focus, a positive interaction • Support during break times, helping pupils build social confidence • Be that consistent, trusted adult who makes school feel safe Some days will stretch you. Others will leave you smiling all the way home. Most will do both. What we’re looking for: • A Psychology graduate or similar • Someone who connects easily and builds rapport quickly • Calm, patient, and emotionally intelligent individuals • A genuine interest in SEND, behaviour, or child development Why Protocol Education? • Weekly PAYE pay, no umbrella stress • Free CPD training, including autism, behaviour, and mental health • A dedicated consultant who supports your journey, not just your placement • Opportunities to work across a range of Gateshead schools • Experience that supports careers in educational psychology or therapy • Long-term roles and progression opportunities If you’re serious about finding graduate jobs in schools, this is one of the most valuable Teaching Assistant jobs in Gateshead and a meaningful entry into SEND support jobs in Gateshead.
