Live In Under Gardener in Wiltshire
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an aspiring candidate to join one of the grandest stately homes in Britain as an under-gardener on a full-time, permanent basis. The successful applicant will work in a department of four, reporting to the Head Gardener and Owners, on all aspects of the garden and grounds maintenance. It is a family run estate, with a large live-in community, therefore discretion is required. The post would be great for someone looking to settle in a beautiful part of the country and join an estate community, making this unique opportunity a way of life.
The estate has been the residence of the family for over 300 years, with the house set in 40-acres of grounds, including landscaped parkland. The all-seasons formal garden comprises a large Parterre, with well laid beds, borders and topiary; a Wild Garden alongside the river, with a range of interesting trees and follies; and a large Walled Kitchen Garden set out for full fruit, vegetable and cut-flower production. The frame yard contains three full size, and two smaller, productive glasshouses, a potting shed and tool stores. Smaller garden rooms create private spaces for the swimming pool, tennis court and knot garden. Alongside expansive formal lawns, there is a cricket pitch, wildflower meadow and paddocks for horses.
The established gardens are planned and managed to ensure maintenance of the highest standards of horticulture and presentation year-round. The current team of 2 full-time gardeners are proud of the garden and work closely alongside the new Head Gardener, recently replacing a previous incumbent who held the post for 40 years.
The opportunity will suit a professional gardener with wide horticultural interests and a strong work ethic. The vacancy would fit a developing gardener looking to find a long-term, varied and stable place to expand their knowledge, skill and experience; or equally an established, qualified gardener looking to settle in a large, private garden.
Suitable applicants will ideally possess, or be working towards, academic horticultural qualifications; have some experience of year-round garden maintenance in private households or large gardens and have good physical fitness. Practical experience with a wide range of garden tools and machinery is desirable. Demonstration of chainsaw, spraying and sports turf management competencies would be a benefit.
Accommodation: A 3-bedroom accommodation is available for the successful applicant rent free. Council Tax and all other bills would be the post holder’s responsibility (Partners, children and well-behaved pets are most welcome)
Working Hours: 8am – 5pm, with a 1 hour break; alongside weekend duty on a 1 in 4 rota of seasonally variable hours
Salary: £21,000 GPA
Vacancy Number: 102131
