About the Role

Right Now Group are representing a well-established specialist freight forwarder , who are currently recruiting for a Customs Team Leader to join their operation based in the Kent area. Our client is seeking a proactive and experienced individual to oversee road freight customs activities, ensuring all import and export processes are completed accurately, compliantly, and within agreed timeframes.

Position: Customs Team Leader
Location: Kent
Hours: Monday - Friday, 09:00 - 17:30
Salary:up to £40,000

Key Responsibilities for a Customs Team Leader:

  • Lead and supervise a team of Customs Clerks, ensuring workloads are distributed effectively to meet deadlines and service expectations
  • Oversee the completion of import and export declarations, ensuring accuracy and compliance with all regulatory requirements
  • Act as the main escalation point for complex or high-risk customs entries and resolve issues efficiently
  • Ensure adherence to all HMRC and associated regulatory frameworks, keeping up to date with legislative changes
  • Monitor daily operations, reviewing documentation and entries to minimise delays, errors, or financial penalties
  • Maintain strong communication with clients, internal departments, and external stakeholders to ensure smooth operations
  • Oversee the correct calculation and processing of duties, taxes, and deferment accounts
  • Identify risks within customs processes and implement improvements to enhance efficiency and compliance
  • Support the training, development, and performance management of team members

Key Skills for a Customs Team Leader:

  • Proven experience in customs processing, including import/export declarations and CDS systems
  • Strong understanding of tariff classifications and customs compliance requirements
  • Working knowledge of DEFRA
  • Previous supervisory or team leadership experience preferred
  • Proficiency in CargoWise is desirable however not essential
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to problem-solve and make decisions under pressure
  • Collaborative approach with the ability to build strong working relationships across teams
