Senior Geotechnical Engineer (Mining & Dams)
Location: Arizona, USA Employment Type: Full-Time | Permanent Salary: $130,000 - $180,000 + Bonus + Full Benefits
As a specialist infrastructure recruiter, I am working in partnership with a leading international engineering consultancy to appoint a Senior Geotechnical Engineer for their Colorado office.
This opportunity sits within a high-performing geotechnical team delivering technically complex mining, tailings, water resources, and renewable energy infrastructure projects across North America.
The OpportunityOur client is recognised for delivering rigorous, technically sound solutions across major earthworks and water-retaining infrastructure programmes. Due to sustained growth within mining and tailings portfolios, they are seeking an experienced geotechnical professional capable of leading investigations, executing advanced analyses, and supporting projects through design and construction.
The core project focus will be tailings storage facilities, with additional exposure to:
Water dams and hydraulic structures
Heap leach pads
Mine waste rock dumps
Heavily loaded structural foundations
Renewable energy and hydropower-related earthworks
This role combines technical leadership, project coordination, client interface responsibilities, and mentorship of junior engineers.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead and coordinate geotechnical site investigations and laboratory testing programmes
Direct and manage fieldwork activities
Interpret in-situ testing data and laboratory results to define soil and rock parameters
Perform geotechnical analyses including slope stability, seepage, settlement, and foundation design
Develop design recommendations for dams, impoundments, excavations, foundations, pipelines, spillways, and penstock anchorages
Prepare and review clear, accurate technical reports, drawings, and specifications
Review project documentation to define technical scope, budgets, and schedules
Provide construction-phase technical support
Act as primary technical liaison with clients
Mentor junior staff and uphold quality and delivery standards
Contribute to business development and proposal support across mining, hydropower, and water sectors
Candidate ProfileMaster's degree in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical specialisation)
Minimum 10 years' experience in the design and construction of mining and/or tailings facilities
Professional Engineer (PE) registration
Strong applied understanding of geotechnical engineering principles
Required technical capability:
MS Office
Slope stability software (GeoStudio and/or RocScience)
Work EnvironmentThe role involves a combination of office-based engineering and field-based site work. Travel to project sites will be required. Compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental standards is mandatory.
Compensation & BenefitsBase salary range: $130,000 - $180,000 per annum, dependent on experience and technical capability. Discretionary annual bonus programme.
