WatersCommander, Navy Recruiting Command Challenge The U.S. Navy faced increasing difficulty in meeting recruitment goals, particularly for specialized roles like submariners. Traditional recruitment tactics weren’t resonating with Generation Z, a digitally native audience that consumes content in interactive and unconventional ways. The challenge was clear: How could the Navy tap into new talent pools and engage individuals who excel at problem-solving but may not have previously considered a career in the military? Inspiration Recognizing the problem-solving and teamwork skills required in submarine operations, the Navy sought to engage individuals with a penchant for puzzles and analytical thinking. Given that over 80% of Gen Z consumes news and entertainment via digital platforms, Reddit—a hub for niche communities and discussion—offered the perfect landscape for an immersive, skill-based recruitment approach. The innovative approach wasn’t just about brand presence—it was a real-time test of logic, strategy, and problem-solving, the very skills needed for submarine warfare.
