About the Role

Today’s job seekers face a very different arena from three or four years ago.

Job applications face the daunting task of bypassing ATS and AI-powered workflows and systems that can sometimes favor certain applicants and disadvantage others. Competition is at an all-time high.

Tailoring an application takes hours, and generic AI assistants breed…you guessed it, generic job applications, which is more of a red flag to employers and does more harm than good in your job search.

So, I decided to test ChatGPT Work, powered by GPT -5.6, to see how it could be my practical job search partner, rather than simply asking it to “write me a resume” or “write a cover letter.”

I wanted to see how it could work as a hands-on assistant in shaping my job search, positioning, and application quality in the market.

For this experiment, I used ChatGPT Work in its different models--Sol, Terra, and Luna--for different types of tasks and requests as part of a typical job search workflow, such as to:

  • Identify and target suitable roles based on my experience
  • Analyze job descriptions
  • Identify the strongest proof points for my experience that I could use to answer application questions, and prepare tailored answers
  • Customize a supporting statement

By the end, I found that the biggest benefit of using ChatGPT Work to find a job (other than speed) was being able to turn a fragmented job search into something that was more structured, strategic, and lifted the weight from what job seekers have to do manually every day.

One caveat: it did not replace my need to verify every claim purported from the AI, and it certainly did not replace my human judgment or personal storytelling skills. And there were things that I had to change to make it work for me.

But it certainly made the job search process a whole lot easier.

In this article, I’ll share with you what worked, where ChatGPT Work -5.6 was generally useful for this job search scenario, and how you can apply this in your own job search so that navigating the job market is less of a headache.

I’ll also break down the features you may find most useful when positioning yourself for new job opportunities:

What Is ChatGPT -5.6 Work?

But first, let’s conquer the elephant in the room. What exactly is GPT -5.6 Work mode?

This is an OpenAI model announced and released July 9, that you’ll only find fully accessible if you’re on one of the paid ChatGPT tiers, like ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Enterprise plans. You won’t see the complete suite of models under Work if you’re on the free or Go plan--at least not yet, but you can access the Terra model.

To access ChatGPT 5.6 Work, open your ChatGPT app, and you'll have the option to switch between Work and regular chat.

On your mobile device, you’ll see a drop-down at the top of the chat where you can switch between modes. On your laptop, it will show as a setting that you can toggle between.

Work mode is, as its name suggests, specifically designed for getting tasks done and boosting your productivity, more than the regular ChatGPT.

In Work mode, you have options for different reasoning levels and speeds for different capabilities and workflows, which enable you to manage your usage limits by selecting the right capability and reason level, depending on the complexity of the task you're about to undertake.

This is where, when you're applying for jobs, it gets really interesting.

In ChatGPT Work, there’s a family of three models: Sol, Terra, and Luna. For each of these, you can select your speed and reasoning level requirements.

Quick Overview Of Sol, Terra, And Luna

  • Sol is for your most complex work. As a job seeker, think analyzing a detailed job spec and comparing against your resume and career history, or building a strategic positioning plan and job search strategy before you begin applying for opportunities.
  • Terra is everyday reasoning where you want to balance medium-level capability and speed alongside cost. For example, if you’re tailoring a resume, drafting or refining job application answers, or converting your experience into a solid supporting statement, this is the mode you’re likely to use most often.
  • Luna is for light and faster work. For instance, you could use this model to scan for keywords in a job description, switch up your LinkedIn headline, or shrink your cover letter down to a specified word count.

Here’s a rundown of how I organized job search tasks using each model and where I found they worked best:

How I Used Sol: The Job Search Strategist

For Sol, I toggled the effort level to “hard” (you don’t have to, feel free to experiment here) and asked it to create a strategic job application plan. And this was the prompt I used:

You’re my job search strategist. Create an in-depth 90-day job search strategy plan for me based on what you know about me, including my resume and industry background. My goal is to secure a role as head of operations.

The Result

After an 11-minutes-and-30-seconds wait, where I occupied myself attending to some other responsibilities that demanded my attention, I came back to a strong action plan that was tailored directly to my industry, role background, and even nuances about my life, such as the fact that I rest on Sabbaths.

This was ChatGPT’s response:

And here’s a snippet of the strategy doc:

I found that it was very helpful, even though it took longer than a standard ChatGPT response. It took significantly less time than it would have taken me on my own.

One downside, however, is that I found that some of what it suggested was slightly unrealistic for the timeline it proposed, based off my personal experience within the industry. What it suggested was based off a slightly conservative, yet optimistic ideal of what the job market looks like.

Nonetheless, within the job search, Sol is ideal before drafting or using application materials, when you need to think through your next steps clearly.

How I Used Terra: The Job Application Partner

For this experiment, I selected the Terra model and entered this prompt:

You’re an executive career coach. Here is the URL of a job I am applying to right now [pasted URL]. Identify the core asks of this job application question below, then create a response to the question using what you know from my resume and our conversations this far.

Pro tip: Use ChatGPT’s skills feature to train the AI on your personal “brand” voice. Then type @ and insert your voice “skill” into the prompt.

The result?

This task took around five minutes on average for the model to complete. The answer was very much tailored to my experience and did not come off as exaggerated or make any false claims. Because I used the my brand voice “skill” the tone of the answer sounded more natural as well.

That being said, I still had to change a couple of sentences to be sure it reflected me more closely and did not mislead in any way.

How I Used Luna: Rapid Assistance

Luna worked best for me when I used it for tasks that required little thought. For example, I took an application answer that Terra gave me, and reduce the word or character limit by while keeping the core wording intact, using Luna.

The job search is full of small admin tasks that can become exhausting if repeated every day, and Luna is perfect for those small things. I even tried it to identify any business or career-building opportunities lying dormant in my inbox, by linking it to the Outlook email app connector.

How To Use ChatGPT In Your Job Search Right Now

The key message here is to use your imagination, get creative, and reimagine each step of your job search workflow with AI.

Rather than using it to create slop and generic resumes and applications that waste everyone’s time and look like a carbon copy of everyone else (which is proven to delay your chances of being hired), here’s your challenge for the remainder of this week:

Sit down and note every repetitive task you undertake as part of your career-building and opportunity-scouting journey.

Ask yourself:

Where can I allow AI to replace my effort? Where does my human judgement need to remain intact, and where can AI act as my administrative assistant?

And how can I create entire workflows that enable me to stand out as an exceptional candidate?
