Thank you for your patience during this update About the Role Hull York Medical School is entering an exciting new phase of strategic growth in research and education. Building on recent successes and major institutional investment, we are seeking an exceptional academic with expertise in translational immunology to join our expanding Centre for Biomedicine. This role offers an outstanding opportunity for an ambitious researcher to shape world‑class biomedical science. We’re driving an ambitious new research strategy that tackles some of the biggest challenges in biomedicine, focusing on themes in which we have research critical mass and expertise: Cardiovascular and Respiratory Biology, and Diabetes & Metabolism, with a commitment to innovation across boundaries. By harnessing emerging technologies, prioritising women’s health, and embedding climate and environmental considerations into everything we do, we are creating interdisciplinary solutions for a healthier future. These themes offer rich opportunities for collaboration and impact build on the University of Hull’s strong performance in REF 2021, where over 80% of our research was rated world‑leading or internationally excellent. Applicants with expertise in immune cell signalling, inflammatory mechanisms, tissue injury and repair, or host–pathogen interactions are particularly encouraged. We are also keen to hear from candidates whose work aligns with metabolism, vascular biology, platelets, or redox signalling. Key Responsibilities Lead and contribute to high‑quality, internationally excellent research in translational immunology. Develop competitive, externally funded research programmes. Produce high‑impact, REF‑returnable research outputs. Contribute to commercial interactions and knowledge exchange activities. Teach undergraduate and postgraduate students in biomedical science and medicine, particularly in innate and adaptive immunity. Supervise research students and support their academic development. Contribute to the wider academic life of the Centre for Biomedicine and Hull York Medical School. JR101995- Lecturer in Translational Immunology Job Description.pdf Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post You will have research experience and a track record of achievement in area of translational immunology, that has the clear potential to complement our existing research strengths, including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and diabetes and metabolism, and that can align with our cross-cutting research priorities of emerging technologies, women’s health, and climate and health. In the role, you will be expected to identify, lead, and contribute to the development and delivery of cutting-edge research studies, generating external research income, and REF-returnable research outputs of international quality. IN addition, we will expect a willingness to support commercial interactions and undertake high quality knowledge exchange. While the focus of this position will be research, you will also be expected to deliver excellent teaching across our undergraduate and taught Master’s degree programmes, with a particular focus on materials relates to innate and adaptive immunity in health and disease as well as offering undergraduate and postgraduate research project supervision and pastoral support as appropriate. RESEARCH AT THE HULL YORK MEDICAL SCHOOL Research at the Hull York Medical School is tacking some of the biggest health challenges of today, spanning fundamental biomedical discovery research, uncovering tomorrow’s therapies, to clinical research testing of innovative treatments for patients, and applied health research which aims to reduce inequalities in access to care and treatment (see https://www.hyms.ac.uk/research). In REF 2021, more than 85% of our research was recognised as world leading or internationally excellent. As a joint medical school, we can capitalise on strong collaborative links across the Universities of Hull and York, the Hull Universities Teaching Hospitals (HUTH) and healthcare providers across the region. The other members include the School of Psychology and Social Work, the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, and the School of Health Care. BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH AT THE HULL YORK MEDICAL SCHOOL Biomedical research at the Hull site of the Hull York Medical School is concentrated largely into the Centre for Biomedicine, in which the new appointee will be affiliated. The Centre has experienced a step change in recent research ambition and success, with recent major research investment into projects and equipment from UKRI, MRC and The Wolfson Foundation. In addition, we have several projects supported by a range of funders including the British Heart Foundation, Breast Cancer UK and many others. Furthermore, we have forged strong links with regional and national biotech companies, to support a range of research. This is enabled by a rich array of laboratory facilities, including a state-of-the-art imaging facility, with super-resolution microscopy. Our research pillars are cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and metabolism and diabetes, although much of our research spans these pillars and beyond, into women’s health, cancer, and the impact of the environment on our health.
