Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)?

We are working in partnership with a Pupil Referral Unit in Wokingham to provide specialist alternative provision across Berkshire and the surrounding counties. Due to an increasing number of referrals, we are seeking dedicated and compassionate SEN Academic Mentors to join our growing team.

This rewarding role involves supporting pupils who may be struggling to engage with education, helping them build confidence, develop positive learning habits, and overcome barriers that may be impacting their educational journey.

About the Role

As an SEN Academic Mentor, you will provide tailored one-to-one support to primary and secondary-aged pupils with a range of additional needs. Your role will focus on helping learners develop academically, socially, and emotionally while encouraging positive engagement with education.

Sessions may take place in:

• The pupil's home
• Community settings such as libraries or learning hubs
• Other suitable educational environments

Key responsibilities include:

• Delivering personalised academic mentoring and learning support
• Supporting pupils to develop confidence, motivation, and independence
• Building positive and trusting relationships with young people and their families
• Encouraging engagement in learning through creative and flexible approaches
• Supporting the development of study skills, organisation, and learning routines
• Helping pupils identify and overcome barriers to education
• Monitoring progress and providing regular feedback where required
• Acting as a positive role model and advocate for each learner

Who You Will Be Supporting

You will work with pupils presenting with a range of needs, including:

• Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
• Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
• Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
• ADHD
• Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
• Anxiety and emotional wellbeing needs
• Communication and interaction difficulties
• Behavioural challenges
• Other additional or complex learning needs

Many pupils will have experienced difficulties within mainstream education and benefit from a personalised, relationship-based approach to support their progress and wellbeing.

About You

We are looking for individuals who have:

• Experience working with children or young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs
• A good understanding of neurodiversity and inclusive practice
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills
• The ability to motivate and engage learners who may be reluctant to participate in education
• A patient, resilient, and empathetic approach
• Experience in mentoring, youth work, education, pastoral support, tutoring, coaching, or similar roles
