By working at The National Archives, you will be helping us protect over 1,000 years of historical documents. Discover more about what it is like to work at The National Archives.

At the National Archives, our values aren’t just something we talk about – they’re how we show up for each other, for our work, and for the public we serve. They shape our culture, fuel our ambition, and keep us moving forward together.

We do the right thing, even when no one’s watching.

From preserving the nation’s records to supporting our colleagues, we act with honesty, clarity, and purpose. People trust us to get it right – and we take that responsibility seriously.

Our people make this place what it is.

Everyone brings something different, and that’s exactly what makes us stronger. We’re big on respect, kindness, and cheering each other on. We work hard, but we also make space for enjoyment and connection.

We’re all about curiosity and courage.

New ideas excite us. Innovation inspires us. We experiment, take smart risks, and learn as we go. No matter your role, you’ll have the freedom to shape change, try new things, and help build what comes next.

The National Archives is part of the civil service. Due to this, we offer the many advantages of civil service employment. These include:

  • flexible work options, including hybrid working (when possible).
  • training and career development
  • staff forums and green committee
  • maternity, adoption or shared parental leave of up to 26 weeks full pay followed by 13 weeks of statutory pay and a further 13 weeks unpaid, and paternity leave of 3 weeks full pay (provided eligibility criteria are met)

It’s not all about the work that you do – your health and wellbeing matters to us too. We run regular wellbeing initiatives and offer an Employee Assistance Programme and an eye care voucher scheme.

We also have a sports and social club, which is part of the wider Civil Service Sports and Social Club.

Your subscriptions fund many activities including yoga, our on-site gym, shower facilities, and staff bar (Friday evenings) as well as social evenings like our popular quiz nights.
