About the Role

Mechanical Engineer – Defence Engineering Support (Contract) Location: Stafford (On-Site) Contract Length: 6 Months Positions Available: Multiple Rate: To be discussed at point of application A unique opportunity has arisen for Mechanical Engineers to join a specialist engineering team supporting the maintenance, repair and refurbishment of critical ground support equipment used by the UK Armed Forces. This role would particularly suit candidates with a military engineering background or those who have worked on vehicles, heavy mechanical equipment, engines or hydraulic systems within defence, aviation, marine, automotive or industrial environments. You will be joining a team responsible for ensuring key equipment remains operational, reliable and ready to support military capability. The Role Working within a specialist defence engineering environment, you will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair and modification of mechanical equipment used to support military operations on the ground. This includes a wide variety of ground support systems used to maintain and operate defence assets. Key responsibilities include: • Conducting diagnostics, fault finding, repair and refurbishment of mechanical equipment • Performing maintenance, modification and calibration activities using approved engineering documentation • Working down to component and module level repairs where required • Conducting equipment surveys and inspections to determine serviceability • Producing and updating engineering documentation and maintenance procedures • Supporting reverse engineering and feasibility investigations where required • Supervising, mentoring or supporting junior engineers and apprentices • Ensuring all work is carried out in line with engineering governance, safety standards and operational procedures You will also contribute to solving urgent operational engineering requirements, helping ensure that critical equipment remains available to support defence operations. Equipment You May Work On The engineering team maintains a wide range of Ground Support Equipment (GSE) used to support military capability. Examples include: • Refuelling systems and vehicles • Mechanical maintenance vehicles • Hydraulic systems • Diesel and petrol engines • Ground handling and support equipment used around aircraft What We’re Looking For We are interested in engineers with strong mechanical fault-finding and repair experience, particularly those from hands-on technical backgrounds. Ideal candidates may have experience from: • Armed Forces engineering trades (REME, RAF, Naval Engineering etc.) • Automotive or heavy vehicle maintenance • Marine or diesel engine maintenance • Aviation ground support equipment • Industrial or plant maintenance environments • Defence engineering contractors Key skills and experience include: • Demonstrable mechanical inspection, repair and maintenance experience • Strong fault finding and diagnostic capability • Experience working with mechanical systems, engines, hydraulics or machinery • Comfortable using engineering documentation and technical manuals • Basic IT literacy for engineering systems and documentation • Engineering qualification or recognised engineering apprenticeship
