About the Role
Your role at Media Studies The University of Amsterdam invites applications for a D3 Lecturer (PhD level, or soon to be completed) to contribute to the Dual Master Archival and Information Studies , in close collaboration with the BA Media & Information, and the MA Cultural Data & AI programmes – three uniquely connected programmes that position the humanities at the forefront of digital transformation. We are seeking an enthusiast and education-driven scholar with expertise at the intersection of archival studies, media studies, and data/AI-driven cultural analysis. The successful candidate will contribute to interdisciplinary teaching, curriculum development, and supervision of students’ internships, theses and/or embedded research projects. You will teach and develop courses that bridge theory and practice, ranging from archival concepts and methodologies, coding in digital humanities, to data-driven and AI-based approaches in cultural data. The teaching is closely aligned with professional discourse and practice, in Amsterdam and internationally at esteemed institutions and grassroots initiatives. This is what you will be doing Teaching of developed courses (lectures and seminar groups); Developing new or adjusting existing courses with colleagues; Supervising BA and/or (DU)MA theses, and DUMA internships; Contributing to the improvement of education and identifying areas for enhancement, particularly in the integration of data-driven methods in archival and media contexts; Performing administrative duties and participating in committees and/or working groups. This what we ask of you PhD (or to be completed) in Archival Studies, Media Studies, Information Studies, Digital Humanities, or a related field; Demonstrated teaching experience at university level (BA and/or MA level); Strong educational profile in areas such as digital archives, cultural data, or digital applications (OSINT) in the humanities; Good communication and organizational skills; Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment; A University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you have not attained a UTQ, you are required to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment contract and obtain the qualification within three years of employment; Good command of Dutch and English. If you do not speak Dutch, an active and passive command must be acquired within the first two years of employment and the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II must be passed; A trial lecture may be part of the application process; Reliable team player. In addition, you will receive an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable; Attaining the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ); Attaining the Dutch as a Second Language programme II. This is where you'll be working The AIS team: You will be working within a diverse team of lecturers and researchers from various backgrounds (archival studies, digital humanities, decolonial studies, and heritage). Together we prepare students for a growing professional practice in governmental institutions and heritage organizations involved in recordkeeping (from museums, to design studios). We critically question and probe these practices rather than teach how to be an archivist in a practical sense. Our international students in the Dual Master are selected, highly motivated and some come to us to obtain the necessary diploma for specific archival functions. Due to the small number of students, there is a strong sense of connection and loyalty between students and lecturers. Within the team, you are given ample freedom to (co)develop the teaching in line with proven insights. The Media Studies Department The AIS team, together with 5 other teams, forms the Media Studies Department. It is one of the largest departments of the faculty, where PhD students, researchers, and academic and practice-based teachers work closely together. Due to the international character of the department, the working language alternates between Dutch and English. About the Faculty of Humanities The Faculty of Humanities encompasses a wide spectrum of progressive education and research. From the historical heart of Amsterdam, it maintains intensive contacts with many partners in culture, society, and business. In this way, it is part of a humanities hub of international stature.
