About the Role

Performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of varied types of trucks, heavy equipment, and accessories. On occasion, performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the repair and maintenance of automobiles. Performs related work as required.<ol style="margin-bottom: 3pt"><li>Performs a variety of troubleshooting diagnostics and preventative maintenance [PMs] repairs. Maintains a variety of light and heavy-duty trucks, heavy construction equipment, automobiles, their accessories, and other equipment such as air compressors, mowers, and spray equipment.</li><li>Performs major repairs on gasoline and diesel engines; transmissions; differentials; drive units; brakes; suspension systems; cooling systems; fuel systems; instrumentation; electrical systems; hydraulic systems; accessory power equipment.   Removes, repairs, replaces, and rebuilds engines, carburetors, ignition systems and other components of trucks and heavy equipment.  Performs skilled and semi-skilled repairs on automobiles, such as tune-ups, removing, repairing and/or replacing water pumps, fan belts and brakes.</li><li>Repairs and alters equipment using welding and cutting equipment.</li><li>Instructs Fleet Mechanic Helper in the repair and maintenance of trucks, heavy construction equipment, their components, other equipment, and automobiles.</li><li>Records time on work records, requisitions parts, and recommends the ordering of parts, tools, and equipment.  May maintain inventory records on automotive parts, lubricants, wheels, and tires.</li><li>Performs emergency road service and related field repairs.</li><li>Cleans surfaces such as metal, wood and glass for spray and letter painting, paints, stripes and letters construction and automotive equipment.</li></ol><ul><li>Six (6 ) months of on-the-job experience with the City of Flint</li><li>OR</li><li>Minimum of one(l) year of full-time experience performing heavy equipment and mechanical repairs. </li><li>OR </li><li>Two (2) years of apprenticeship in heavy-duty mechanical equipment</li><li>OR</li><li>An associate's degree (or an equivalent number of coursework hours) in Automotive Technology and two (2) years of experience as a Mechanic.</li></ul><br><strong><u>NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S)</u>:</strong><ul><li>Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan Driver's License.</li><li>Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan CDL with class B endorsement OR the ability to obtain within one (l) year of appointment.</li><li>Certification as a Specialty Mechanic in at least 2 of the first 6 categories of heavy-duty truck repair as defined by the State of Michigan (Categories include Engine Repair-Gasoline, Engine Repair Diesel, Drive Train, Brakes & Braking Systems, Suspension & Steering Systems, and Electrical Systems.) OR equivalent qualification/certification in a branch of the United States Military Service (copy of DD-214 must be provided as proof of qualification).</li><li>Possession of basic hand tools as defined by the agreement between City of Flint and Local 1600 AFSCME.</li><li>Ability and willingness to continue to pursue additional State of Michigan Heavy Duty Truck Repair Specialty Certifications to become a State of Michigan Certified Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic ll.</li></ul><strong><u>Failure to maintain the minimum required certifications may result in disciplinary action up to and including discharge.</u></strong><br><br><br><br><ul><li>Considerable knowledge of the design, operation, and repair of light and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel equipment, hydraulic systems, and accessory power equipment.</li><li>Ability to diagnose mechanical defects and ability to determine parts and adjustments necessary to put equipment into proper operating condition.</li><li>Ability to meet physical, visual, and mental standards of the job.</li><li>Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety to oneself, other persons, and equipment.</li></ul><br><br>
