About the Role

Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies. Outcomes of PGY1 residency training Optimize patient-centered care by providing evidence-based medication therapy as an integral member of the healthcare team Demonstrate excellence in the provision of educational activities for health care professionals and health care professionals in training Demonstrate project management skills in conducting quality/process improvement initiatives Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills Residency overview Our residency program provides skill development in basic and specialized pharmaceutical care, teaching, practice management, and leadership.  Residents collaborate with pharmacists, providers, nurses, and other health care professionals to identify, prevent, and resolve medication therapy issues.  Emphasis is placed on improvement of clinical skills in a variety of areas, however, total care of the patient will also be taught.  Overseeing the medication preparation and distribution process completes the resident’s understanding of the full medication use process.  Teaching and precepting pharmacy students takes three forms.  First, when residents are scheduled on a learning experience and there is incidentally an Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) student in the same area, the resident will precept the student under the supervision of a pharmacist preceptor.  Second, residents are assigned to moderate case presentations with APPE students bi-weekly.  Third, the residents organize and supervise Initial Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) students. Residents also have the option to pursue a teaching certificate and act as a teaching assistant with the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. To advance practice management and leadership skills, residents will participate in managing pharmacy practice, understanding human resources management, and planning/monitoring department quality, regulatory and accreditation requirements. The resident will attend meetings with a preceptor leader to gain exposure to administrative issues at the hospital and health-system.  Multiple projects will be selected and assigned throughout the residency to address current issues or longstanding hospital needs, including at least one medication use evaluation (MUE) and a major project.  These projects will focus on medication safety, medication use optimization, pharmacy operations, and/or financial impact.
