About the Role
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Section Engineer to join our delivery team on the HS2 project in Brackley. The role will involve taking full responsibility for a defined section of works, primarily focused on bulk earthworks, drainage and associated civils, ensuring works are delivered safely, on programme, to specification and within budget.
You will work closely with the Site Agent, Sub Agent, commercial team and subcontractors, providing day-to-day engineering leadership and technical assurance on site.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Site Delivery
Manage and deliver a defined section of earthworks and drainage works in line with HS2 and client specifications
Set out works using GPS / Total Station and check works for compliance
Interpret and implement construction drawings, specifications and ITPs
Produce and maintain as-built records, red-line drawings and quality documentation
Raise and manage TQs, NCRs and EWN/compensation events where required
Earthworks & Drainage
Oversee cut & fill operations, embankments, formation, capping layers and stabilisation works
Manage installation of surface water and foul drainage, attenuation systems, culverts and headwalls
Ensure correct testing and recording (e.g. compaction, materials, levels, drainage testing)
Monitor earthworks quantities and support progress reporting
Health, Safety & Environment
Promote a strong safety-first culture in line with HS2 standards
Prepare and brief RAMS, permits to dig / break ground, task briefings and daily briefings
Ensure environmental and ecological controls are implemented and maintained
Management & Coordination
Supervise Site Engineers and support graduate / junior engineers
Coordinate subcontractors, plant and materials to meet programme targets
Contribute to short-term planning, 3–6 week lookaheads and progress reporting
Liaise with design, commercial and HS2 stakeholders
Required Experience & Skills
Essential
Proven experience as a Section Engineer or Site Engineer on major civils projects
Strong background in earthworks and drainage on infrastructure schemes
Experience working on HS2 or similar large-scale projects
Good understanding of quality assurance, ITPs and handover requirements
Ability to manage subcontractors and deliver works independently
Strong communication and leadership skills
Desirable
Previous experience on rail or highways megaprojects
Familiarity with NEC contracts
Experience with GPS machine control / digital engineering
Qualifications & Certifications
HNC / HND / Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
CSCS (Gold or Black)
SMSTS or SSSTS (preferred)
Temporary Works Supervisor / Coordinator (desirable)
