It is provided by your electricity supplier. On 30 June 2025 the service will be switched off. Read our guidance below for what this means for you. What is the RTS? The Radio Teleswitch Service is a system introduced in the 1980s in the UK to manage electricity meters. It sends signals via radio waves to switch between peak (expensive) and off-peak (cheaper) electricity rates, helping customers save money by using electricity during cheaper off-peak hours. The RTS also controls when heating and hot water systems turn on, ensuring they operate during off-peak times.  Why is the RTS being switched off? On 30 June 2025 the service will be switched off as it is reaching the end of its operational life. The equipment that produces the radio signal can no longer be adequately maintained. Without the RTS signal, systems may become unpredictable, potentially not working or turning on or off at incorrect times. What impact will this have on households? Households using RTS meters may be affected by this switch-off. Suppliers are required to proactively contact customers who currently use RTS meters to inform them about the upcoming switch-off date and the need to upgrade to a smart meter to avoid disruptions.
