Embedded Linux Developer Location: South Cambridge / Saffron Walden areaWorking pattern: Hybrid – 3 days per week onsiteSalary: Competitive, dependent on experienceEmployment type: PermanentI’m working with an established technology consultancy looking for an Embedded Linux Developer to help deliver innovative products across sensing, robotics, communications, defence, medical and IoT applications.This is an unusually varied embedded role, offering the chance to work across Linux-based systems, microcontrollers, RTOS, bare-metal development and device drivers. You’ll join a multidisciplinary engineering environment, contributing to technically challenging projects from initial concept through to final delivery.The roleYou’ll be responsible for:Developing embedded Linux solutions for ARM-based SoCsWorking across Linux user space, kernel space and device treesSupporting system bring-up, board integration and hardware debuggingDeveloping real-time software using C and C++Working with RTOS and bare-metal systems across different MCU platformsBuilding and maintaining custom Linux images using YoctoDiagnosing complex software, hardware and system-level issuesCollaborating closely with electronics, FPGA and wider engineering teamsContributing to technical documentation, project planning and engineering standardsWorking directly with customers to understand and solve challenging technical problemsEssential experience:Commercial embedded Linux developmentStrong C or C++ programming skillsExperience with ARM-based SoCs or embedded MCU platformsKnowledge of device trees, Linux user space and kernel spaceExperience integrating software with hardwareAn adaptable mindset and an interest in working across varied technologiesExperience with some of the following would be highly beneficial:Yocto or custom Linux image developmentLinux device driversRTOS or bare-metal developmentPython, C# or another scripting language for tooling and test automationBoard bring-up and reading electronic schematicsDSP, algorithms, communication protocols or state machinesOpenCPI, STICS or SOSAIndustrial, medical, communications or defence projectsThis position would suit a well-rounded embedded engineer who enjoys variety, wants exposure to the complete product lifecycle and is comfortable working at the boundary between software and electronics.You’ll receive a strong overall package, ongoing technical development and the opportunity to work on genuinely varied engineering challenges within a friendly and highly capable team.
