Primary Purpose
The HIV Counselor & Tester is responsible for providing culturally competent, confidential HIV counseling, testing, referrals, and HIV prevention education. The HIV Counselor & Tester will perform HIV risk assessments, HIV testing, disclosure of HIV testing results, and partner elicitation and notification services.
Minimum Specifications
Education
- Associate's Degree in a health care related field preferred.
Experience
- Two (2) years of HIV Counseling & Testing experience required.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
- Required Valid Texas Driver's License.
- Prefer registration with the Partner Notification Program of the Texas Department of State Health Services for HIV training to provide test results to patients.
- Prefer Phlebotomy Certification.
Skills or Special Abilities
- Spanish and English Bi-Lingual preferred.
- Must demonstrate a medical knowledge of disease process; general knowledge of human services; HIV prevention strategies, and be culturally sensitive.
- Must be knowledgeable about HIV harm and risk reduction, AOD and sexuality issues.
- NYS Domestic Violence Screening (HU will refer to training, as necessary)
- Required completion of HIV Pre/Post Test Counseling courses from the Texas Department of State Health Services within 90 days of hire.
- Must be knowledgeable about HIV harm and risk reduction, AOD and sexuality issues.
- Knowledgeable about HIV infection, transmission, and treatment; knowledgeable in local, state, and federal laws regarding HIV and other relevant issues of providing health care, especially the right to privacy and confidentiality.
- Must possess active listening and good interpersonal skills.
