GENERAL FUNCTIONThe Functional Designer uses research and experience to develop integrated functional designs and drawings. This role is responsible for the design, planning, manufacture, construction, and installation of electrical and electronic components and systems while ensuring all designs meet applicable regulatory standards related to electrical installations. TYPICAL DUTIESThe following statements describe the general nature and level of work being performed and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities.Carry out engineering assignments associated with electrical design to ensure proposed designs meet contract requirements.Produce complex layouts and fabrication-ready deliverables.Review and check peers' drawings.Approve design decisions at the drawing level and resolve design conflicts.Ensure quality and compliance to reduce rework.Draft and design electrical systems under the supervision of the Cognizant Electrical Engineer.Maintain documentation and data related to electrical designs.Create innovative and cost-effective solutions in the development of vessels.Review purchase specifications from other disciplines for compliance and integration with the overall vessel design.Prepare reports and respond to inquiries from regulatory agencies.Coordinate with vendors to ensure design compatibility.Attend and support meetings with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG).Mentor junior designers.DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE & TRAININGStrong knowledge of manufacturing processes and common materials.Good understanding of all phases of procurement activities for marine products, industry regulations, and company standards.Considerable knowledge of electrical design.Good knowledge of regulatory and company standards applicable to electrical installations for division products, or the ability to acquire this knowledge quickly.Ability to translate technical requirements into usable data.Experience interacting with Production, multiple design teams from several companies, customer representatives, and equipment manufacturers.Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees, customers, and subcontractors.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD.Strong working knowledge of Maritime Regulatory Authorities, including ABS, DNV, NAVSEA, MIL, USCG, IMO, IEEE, and related standards.Working knowledge of shipboard power systems, including:Development and maintenance of Electrical One-Line (EOL) diagrams.Electrical Plant Load Analysis (EPLA).Auxiliary Control Systems (ACS) and Machinery Control Systems (MCS).Block diagrams and elementary wiring diagrams.Thorough understanding of vessel design as it relates to electrical power systems and space arrangements, including:StructuralHull design considerations related to electrical installations.Outfitting and arrangement of electrical spaces.MechanicalHVAC and auxiliary systems (such as cooling water systems) that support electrical systems and space arrangements.ElectricalPower generation, power distribution, and lighting systems.Marine cable types and applications.Electrical arrangement of spaces.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIESMinimum of 5 years of experience in electrical design, shipbuilding, and production processes;ORMinimum of 3 years of experience with an Associate's Degree in 3D Modeling and Design Technology, an electrical-related field, or equivalent experience as an electrical apprentice.
