About the Role

Specialist Teacher - Autism Team UTISM SERVICE: Specialist Teacher Role ‘Improving outcomes for children and young people experiencing social communication differences’ This role is to be a Specialist Teacher within Cheshire West and Chester’s Specialist Autism Service. The post holder will work directly with pupils referred to the Autism Service, who are a team of professionals providing advice and support for mainstream schools to improve inclusion and provision for autistic pupils (2-19 years) or those experiencing related social communication differences. Working collaboratively with a dedicated team, the role involves: Providing specialist advice, guidance, and support to schools and settings to promote inclusive practice. Undertaking detailed assessments, planning and delivering tailored programmes, and monitoring progress. Supporting transitions between phases and advising on deployment of resources and strategies. Delivering training, including autism-specific approaches, to build staff confidence and capacity in mainstream and specialist settings. Liaising with multi-agency partners and contributing to service development initiatives. The successful applicant will be an experienced practitioner with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), substantial experience supporting autistic pupils, and a strong understanding of current SEN theory, safeguarding frameworks, and inclusive approaches. They will demonstrate excellent communication, problem-solving, and collaborative skills, alongside a commitment to ongoing professional development. This is an exciting opportunity to join Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Specialist Teaching Team as a Specialist Teacher for Autism. This pivotal role supports the inclusion of children and young people across the borough. Demand and complexity of need continues to grow nationally, and Cheshire West is committed to promoting highly inclusive practice in all schools and settings. As a Specialist Teacher, you will work directly with pupils aged 2-19, their schools, families and partner agencies to ensure access to high-quality education and improved outcomes. You will provide specialist advice, undertake consultations including qualitative assessments and deliver tailored programmes to meet individual needs, including those with co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, SEMH, and OCD. The role also involves: Supporting schools to implement autism-specific strategies and deploy resources effectively. Delivering training, including autism-focused approaches, to build staff confidence and capacity. Liaising with multi-agency partners and contributing to service development. Promoting Quality First Teaching and inclusive approaches aligned with the SEND Code of Practice and Equality Act 2010. The successful candidate will: Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and have substantial experience supporting pupils with autism. Demonstrate excellent communication and collaborative skills. Have a thorough understanding of SEN legislation, safeguarding frameworks, and inclusive practice. Be proactive, well-organised, and committed to ongoing professional development. This hybrid role requires flexibility to work across Cheshire West and Chester, including schools, council offices, and occasional home working.
