The Medical Surgical RN provides direct patient care to adult and geriatric patients with a broad range of medical diagnoses and post-surgical needs. Responsibilities include patient assessment, care planning, medication administration, patient monitoring, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patient education to ensure safe and effective outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualized care plans
  • Administer medications, IV therapies, and prescribed treatments
  • Monitor patient conditions, vital signs, and responses to interventions
  • Provide post-operative nursing care including wound management and pain control
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, and discharge planning
  • Coordinate care with physicians, therapists, case management, and ancillary staff
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation within EMR systems
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition
  • Support infection prevention and patient safety standards
  • Delegate responsibilities appropriately to support staff
  • Adult and geriatric patients
  • Medical diagnoses including:
    • Cardiac conditions
    • Respiratory illness
    • Diabetes management
    • Chronic disease management
  • Post-surgical patients including:
    • Orthopedic procedures
    • General surgery
    • Abdominal procedures
  • Acute care inpatient hospital setting
  • Fast-paced Med/Surg nursing environment
  • Collaborative interdisciplinary teams
  • Diverse patient acuity and clinical exposure
  • Opportunities for day, night, weekend, and rotating schedules depending on assignment
  • Active Connecticut RN License
  • Graduate of an accredited ADN or BSN nursing program
  • Current BLS Certification through the American Heart Association
  • Minimum 1–2 years of acute care nursing experience preferred
  • BSN preferred
  • ACLS Certification preferred
  • Telemetry experience preferred
  • Experience with Epic or Cerner EMR systems preferred
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills
  • Effective communication and teamwork
  • Ability to prioritize in fast-paced clinical settings
  • Compassionate and patient-centered approach to care
  • Ability to manage multiple patient assignments and varying acuity levels
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to assist with patient movement and lifting
  • Manual dexterity for clinical procedures
