Interim Traffic Engineer

Location: Gloucestershire
Rate: Â£35 per hour via umbrella company (inside IR35)
Start Date: May 2026 
Duration: 6 months

 

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Traffic Engineer to support the delivery of a range of highway and traffic engineering projects across Gloucestershire.

This is a hands-on interim role where you will take responsibility for managing projects through their full lifecycle – from initial design through to implementation – ensuring schemes are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with statutory requirements.

You will play a key role in developing practical and innovative engineering solutions across both urban and rural environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and deliver traffic engineering projects from inception to completion
  • Produce design solutions including calculations, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Prepare contract documentation including scopes and bills of quantities
  • Supervise project teams, contractors, and site activities where required
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, standards, and health & safety requirements
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, project managers, and external partners
  • Monitor project progress, budgets, and performance, providing regular reporting
  • Undertake site supervision and support contract administration (including NEC4 where applicable)
  • Assess contractor performance and validate payment applications

About You

  • Proven experience delivering traffic or highway engineering projects within a local authority or similar environment
  • Strong working knowledge of UK engineering standards, guidance, and best practice
  • Experience producing technical designs, reports, and contract documentation
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate stakeholders effectively
  • Experience supervising contractors and overseeing works on site
  • Competent in relevant design and engineering software
  • Understanding of NEC contracts (desirable)

Additional Requirements

  • Full UK driving licence
  • Willingness to undertake occasional site visits and out-of-hours duties
