The PACU Registered Nurse is responsible for monitoring patients during the immediate post-anesthesia recovery period, ensuring safe recovery from anesthesia while identifying and responding to potential complications.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Monitor patients recovering from general, regional, or local anesthesia
  • Assess and maintain airway patency, respiratory status, and hemodynamic stability
  • Perform ongoing vital sign monitoring and interpret clinical findings
  • Administer medications, including pain management and antiemetics, per provider orders
  • Recognize and respond promptly to post-anesthesia complications
  • Assess surgical sites and provide appropriate wound care
  • Collaborate with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Educate patients and families regarding recovery expectations and discharge instructions
  • Accurately document patient care in accordance with facility standards
  • Prepare patients for discharge or transfer to inpatient units
  • Maintain infection prevention and patient safety standards

Successful PACU nurses demonstrate:

  • Strong knowledge of anesthesia recovery and post-operative care
  • Excellent critical thinking and rapid clinical assessment skills
  • Proficiency in airway management and emergency response
  • Strong communication and patient education abilities
  • Ability to prioritize care in a fast-paced surgical environment
  • Outstanding teamwork and attention to detail
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Active Ohio Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Current BLS certification
  • Current ACLS certification
  • NIH Stroke Certification preferred but not required
  • Previous PACU experience preferred but not required
