JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Sports Centre Assistant (Variable hours) Department: Commercial Activities Reporting To: Sports Centre and Gym Manager Date JD produced/revised: January 2026 Primary purpose of this job role To act as the welcoming face of the Sports Centre during opening hours, playing a key role in ensuring its smooth, safe, and efficient operation. The post holder will oversee the safe set- up use and storage of facilities and equipment, carry out regular building patrols, and lead fitness classes for staff, students, and members of the public. Primary duties, tasks and responsibilities of this job role 1. Assist in the supervision of the Sports Centre. 2. Deliver Fitness classes to staff, students and members of the public. 3. Deliver gym tours and Inductions to students, staff and members of the public. 4. Set up, dismantles and stores equipment. 5. Undertake front of house and administrative duties relating to the Sports Centre. 6. Promote sport to students and staff and local Community. 7. Supervise Fitness Suite. 8. Maintain Health and Safety and cleaning standards. 9. Professional development. 10. Undertake other duties as may reasonably be required commensurate with the grade (at the initial place of work or at any other College site). Job Activities 1. Supervision of the Sports Centre 1.1 Supervise access to the building by students, staff and members of the public. 1.2 Ensure that facility users comply with the Sports Centre rules. 1.3 Supervise and lead user activity when required i.e. Cross College Sport, Exercise Classes and children’s holiday club. 1.4 Supervise users of the gym’s to include member inductions, writing fitness programmes and general cleaning. 2. Sporting Equipment 2.1 Take responsibility for setting up and providing the appropriate sporting equipment to the facility users. 2.2 Dismantle and store equipment correctly and safely after use. 2.3 Ensure equipment is safe in accordance with the relevant Health and Safety regulations. 2.5 Maintain and clean equipment and facilities to specified standard. 3. Front of House and Administration 3.1 Deal with clients’ queries by telephone and in person at the reception area. 3.2 Operate the Sports Centre booking systems. 3.3 Operate the administrative system (e.g. diary, registration, filing etc). 3.4 Process credit card payments through the cash register. 3.5 Cash up and prepare takings for banking. 3.6 Liaise with user groups to ensure their needs are met. 4. Supervise Fitness Suite 4.1 Carry out Student public and staff inductions as and when required. 4.2 Encourage all users to participate in any fitness suite promotions that are running. 4.3 Maintain cleanliness and presentation of the Fitness Suite. 4.4 Supervise users of the fitness suite and free weights gym to ensure safe and correct use of equipment and facilities. 5. Promotion of Sport and Fitness 5.1 Assist in planning, implementing and leading a mixed programme of sporting and fitness activities for staff and students and members of the public on a weekly basis. 5.2 Maintain/record attendance figures for all activities. 5.3 Replenish leaflet displays regularly. 5.4 Organise and run sport and fitness promotions to increase participation from all user groups. 5.6 Lead your own regular fitness and exercise classes and cover other instructors where necessary. 6. Maintain Health and Safety 6.1 Carry out daily checks when opening and closing following up on any necessary action. 6.2 Carry out regular patrols throughout the day dealing with any issues that arise. 6.3 Complete tasks on the daily cleaning and maintenance programme. 6.4 Ensure the facility is clean and tidy at all times. 6.5 Record/report any maintenance requirements arranging removal/closure of any equipment if necessary. 6.5 Supervise set up and dismantling of equipment at the start and end of lessons. 7. General 7.1 Maintain the appearance of all areas in the Sports Centre. 7.2 Ensure the facilities are clean at all times. 7.3 Carry out daily safety/security procedures to ensure the facility is safe and secure. 7.4 Record/Report any maintenance requirements arranging removal/closure of any equipment, if necessary. 7.5 Support staff and cover for holiday/sickness. 7.6 Maintain uniform regulations and standards at all times 7.8 Be prepared to undertake courses/qualifications to improve the standard of provision for clients. You are liable to undertake other duties as may reasonably be required to commensurate with your grade at your initial place of work or at any other College site.
