About the Role

Position Summary A Houston-based insurance organization is seeking a Senior Statutory Reporting Accountant to join its Corporate Reporting team. This position will assist with the preparation and filing of statutory financial statements for regulated insurance subsidiaries in accordance with Statutory Accounting Principles, National Association of Insurance Commissioners guidance, and applicable state insurance regulations. The Senior Statutory Reporting Accountant will prepare financial statements, schedules, reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting analyses related to statutory reporting, policy loss reserves, investments, and reinsurance. This position will work under the guidance of statutory reporting and corporate accounting leadership and will collaborate with accounting and finance teams, external actuaries, auditors, and regulatory contacts. This role is well suited for an accounting professional with strong financial reporting, audit, or insurance accounting experience who is interested in developing deeper expertise in statutory and regulatory reporting. Essential Responsibilities Assist with the preparation of quarterly and annual statutory financial statements for regulated insurance subsidiaries. Prepare statutory schedules, exhibits, footnote disclosures, interrogatories, and supporting workpapers. Prepare and post journal entries affecting statutory financial statements. Complete monthly and quarterly account reconciliations and investigate reconciling items. Maintain supporting documentation for statutory financial statement balances and disclosures. Assist with the reconciliation of GAAP financial results to statutory financial results. Prepare policy loss reserve schedules and related supporting analyses on both GAAP and statutory bases. Compile data and prepare schedules requested by external actuaries for midyear and annual reserve reviews. Assist with monthly investment accounting, including investment income, trading activity, and custodial account reconciliations. Prepare monthly reinsurance accounting entries and reconciliations. Assist with statutory surplus, capital, reserve, and other regulatory reporting analyses. Monitor reporting calendars and help ensure statutory filings and supporting schedules are completed by established deadlines. Research basic statutory accounting and NAIC reporting questions and summarize findings for management review. Prepare audit schedules and respond to information requests from internal auditors, external auditors, and regulatory examiners. Maintain documentation supporting internal controls, SOX compliance, and regulatory reporting requirements. Identify reporting discrepancies and work with accounting teams to resolve issues. Assist with process documentation, reporting automation, and continuous improvement projects. Perform other accounting and reporting projects as assigned. Qualifications Required Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Three or more years of accounting, audit, financial reporting, or insurance accounting experience. Experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, financial statements, or financial reporting schedules. Working knowledge of US GAAP and general accounting principles. Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including experience working with large or detailed financial schedules. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. High level of accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to organize multiple assignments and meet recurring reporting deadlines. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively with accounting, finance, audit, and operational teams. Preferred CPA, CPA candidate, or progress toward CPA certification. Public accounting audit experience. Experience working with insurance companies or other regulated financial services organizations. One or more years of statutory accounting, regulatory reporting, or insurance financial reporting experience. Familiarity with Statutory Accounting Principles or NAIC reporting requirements. Experience with insurance reserves, investments, or reinsurance accounting. Experience supporting quarterly or annual financial statement preparation. Experience supporting external audits or regulatory examinations. Experience with Workday or another enterprise financial system. Position Scope This is an individual-contributor position. The Senior Statutory Reporting Accountant will prepare and analyze assigned reporting areas, while final review, technical accounting conclusions, regulatory communication, and overall filing ownership will remain with management.
