About the Role
Sirius Staffing is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer in Tampa, FL Area for a direct- hire role. Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM–4:00 PM The Senior Engineer or Principal Engineer to provide engineering and operational support for substation protection and control systems. This role is responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of relay protection and control schemes that support safe, reliable, and efficient electric utility operations. You will work closely with System Security, Substation Operations, Project Management, and other utility departments to develop protection philosophies, support capital projects, provide technical guidance, and ensure compliance with utility standards and industry best practices. Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop and implement relay protection and control schemes for substations.Establish protection requirements and operating philosophies in coordination with System Security.Perform relay settings analysis and provide technical guidance related to substation protection.Evaluate, modify, and improve protection and control system designs.Represent Substation Engineering throughout the project management lifecycle.Coordinate engineering deliverables with project teams and operating departments.Support bidding, procurement, and material selection activities.Review manufacturer drawings and equipment specifications for accuracy and compliance.Monitor equipment delivery schedules and project charging requirements.Develop protection and control drawings including:Wiring diagramsInstallation drawingsLayout drawingsBills of Material (BOM)Nameplate schedulesCable schedulesPrepare work orders and technical documentation.Develop switching and operating instructions.Maintain and reconcile engineering records upon project completion.Provide engineering support during construction, commissioning, testing, and checkout activities.Support Protection & Control crews during installation and maintenance work.Participate in rotational on-call support.Conduct field assessments during storm restoration events and identify required repairs.Gather field data and collaborate with operations personnel to improve future designsRequired QualificationsBachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program or Engineering Technology degree from an ABET-accredited program.Minimum 2 years of power system engineering and operations experienceExperience supporting electrical utility, substation, protection and control, or power system projectsSenior Engineer: Minimum 8 years of engineering experience, and Eligible to become a Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of FloridaPrincipal Engineer: Minimum 12 years of engineering experience and Must hold a Professional Engineer (PE) License.Knowledge of power system protection and control systemsAbility to interpret substation and manufacturer drawingsUnderstanding of relay schemes, protection coordination, and system designStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsAbility to independently evaluate and modify engineering designsStrong written and verbal communication skillsEffective project management and organizational abilitiesPreferred QualificationsProfessional Engineer (PE) License in the State of Florida.Utility industry experienceRelay settings experienceSubstation design experienceProtection and control engineering experienceExperience training and mentoring junior engineersAbility to conduct and coordinate complex engineering studiesExperience leading technical projects and preparing engineering reportsAbility to mentor and provide technical guidance to engineering staffWork EnvironmentPrimarily office-based with regular field visits to substations and equipment yardsParticipation in rotational on-call duties is requiredOvertime and weekend work may be requiredStorm restoration support is considered a condition of employment.Frequent travel between multiple Stations.Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, elevated noise levels, and industrial environments.Must be able to wear required PPE and comply with all safety requirements.Occasional nights, weekends, overtime, and on-call support may be required.Ability to walk, climb ladders and stairs, bend, and navigate multi-level power plant structures.
