Role Purpose
MACS EU is seeking an Infrastructure Consultant who can operate at both strategic and hands-on levels. This is a client-facing role suited to a pragmatic architect with strong cloud, infrastructure, security, and enterprise platform experience, who is comfortable leading design activity while also remaining close enough to the technology to support implementation, troubleshooting, and operational transition.
The successful candidate will design and assure secure, scalable solutions across cloud, hybrid, and enterprise environments. They will provide architectural leadership across bids, client engagements, project delivery, technical assurance, and technical escalation, service transition and complex problem resolution, helping MACS deliver robust solutions for complex and security-conscious client environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and deployment of hybrid and cloud-native solutions across cloud platforms, enterprise applications, infrastructure services, and third-party integrations.
- Translate client requirements and business objectives into clear, secure, scalable, and supportable technical solutions.
- Produce and maintain architecture deliverables, including high-level designs, low-level designs, reference architectures, design decisions, technical options papers, and operational handover material.
- Act as solution lead and technical design authority across bids, client engagements, project delivery, and complex implementation activity.
- Provide practical infrastructure delivery support where required, including server provisioning, cloud resource configuration, command-line troubleshooting, performance tuning, and implementation assurance.
- Embed secure-by-design principles across solution architecture, infrastructure design, implementation, and operational transition.
- Support migrations, upgrades, automation, containerisation, resilience, backup, monitoring, and disaster recovery planning.
- Work closely with infrastructure, network, application, security, data, project, and service delivery teams to ensure integrated delivery and effective operational support.
- Support audit and assurance activity by maintaining clear technical documentation, control evidence, risk records, design rationale, and implementation assurance material.
- Identify technical risks, control gaps, architectural issues, and areas of non-conformance, ensuring these are clearly documented and progressed through remediation or risk acceptance routes.
- Contribute to bid responses and proposals, including solution design, architecture modelling, technical assumptions, risk identification, and cost estimation.
- Mentor consultants and technical team members, supporting capability development, knowledge transfer, and continuous improvement across the technical practice.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in solution architecture, infrastructure architecture, cloud architecture, or a closely related senior technical role, preferably with recent hands-on experience.
- Strong practical experience with at least one major public cloud platform, preferably AWS or Microsoft Azure, together with the ability to work across hybrid environments.
- Strong experience designing and delivering solutions across cloud and hybrid environments, including IaaS, PaaS, identity and access management, networking, monitoring, resilience, and operational support considerations.
- Hands-on infrastructure experience, including server configuration, troubleshooting, scripting, automation, and working directly with technical delivery teams.
- Good understanding of security architecture principles, including zero trust, identity, encryption, secure configuration, patching, logging, monitoring, hardening, and vulnerability remediation.
- Experience working in regulated, security-conscious, or assurance-led environments where documentation, evidence, and control alignment are important.
- Ability to produce clear architecture documentation and explain technical decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience contributing to technical governance, design reviews, architecture assurance, risk assessment, and implementation sign-off.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work directly with clients, delivery teams, senior stakeholders, and third-party suppliers.
- Ability to balance architecture quality, delivery practicality, security requirements, cost, risk, and operational impact.
Desirable Skills and Experience
We do not expect candidates to have experience in every technology listed below. We are looking for strong core infrastructure and architecture capability, together with the ability to learn unfamiliar platforms.
- Experience with IBM enterprise platforms, facilities management solutions, enterprise asset management, or Maximo-related environments.
- Exposure to infrastructure automation and DevOps practices, including Terraform, Ansible, CI/CD pipelines, or similar tooling.
- Experience with containerisation and orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift.
- Working knowledge of Linux administration and scripting using Bash, PowerShell, Python, or similar languages.
- Experience with enterprise databases such as IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MongoDB, or similar technologies.
- Knowledge of serverless or event-driven architectures, including services such as AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, Amazon SNS/SQS, EventBridge, or Azure Service Bus.
- Architecture or cloud certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect, TOGAF, SABSA, IAF, or equivalent.
- Experience working with public sector clients or within UK Government security and assurance environments.
Key Attributes
- Pragmatic and delivery-focused, with the ability to move confidently between architecture, assurance, and practical technical implementation.
- Clear communicator who can explain complex technical issues in plain English and adapt messages for different audiences.
- Confident client-facing professional who can act as a trusted advisor and constructive technical challenger.
- Strong problem solver with sound judgement, attention to detail, and a structured approach to risk and decision-making.
- Collaborative team player who is comfortable working across disciplines and supporting others to deliver quality outcomes.
- Self-starter who can work independently, manage competing priorities, and take ownership through to completion.
Additional Notes
- Candidates must be eligible for UK Government security clearance (SC vetted status)
- The role is hybrid, with a Birmingham office base and occasional travel to client sites as required.
- This is a client-facing position and may involve work across multiple projects, bids, and assurance activities.
