About the Role

Job Profile Summary Under the general supervision of the Public Safety Training Director or Associate Vice President’s designee, the Training Coordinator assists with all training components for the Department of Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness (DSSEP) staff and facilitates emergency preparedness education for the broader college community. The role ensures that non-sworn Public Safety Officers and campus stakeholders are equipped to respond to critical incidents, including evacuations and active assailant threats. In addition, the Training Coordinator supports other departmental initiatives and performs related duties as directed to meet operational and preparedness needs. The Training Coordinator also provides general and refresher instruction to Public Safety Department personnel on patrol duties, first aid, ethics, community relations, and campus safety. Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, or a related field is preferred. Minimum Experience: Six years of experience in law enforcement or public safety An equivalent combination of education and experience maybe considered. Minimum Certification: Florida General Instructor Techniques certification preferred. Incident Command System (ICS) certifications (e.g., IS-100, 700). Valid Florida Class E Driver’s License. CPR/AED and First Aid certification (current or ability to obtain within a designated timeframe). Additional FEMA/ICS coursework preferred (e.g., IS-200, IS-800; ICS-300/400 as required by assignment). Active assailant/violence prevention instructor credentials (e.g., ALICE) preferred. Technical Skills: Ability to operate public safety radio systems and life-safety equipment such as AEDs. Preferred Qualifications: At least 1 year of experience as a full-time instructor. Experience developing a new-hire academy and maintaining an annual in-service training program for a public safety organization. Experience supporting emergency management exercises (tabletop, functional, and full-scale) and documenting outcomes. Working knowledge of accreditation or compliance frameworks applicable to campus public safety training programs. Proficiency with LMS platforms, Microsoft Office, and classroom presentation technologies. Essential Functions: Public Safety Personnel Training Curriculum Development: Assist in developing and updating course curriculum and materials, lesson plans, and instructional guides to comply with standards stipulated by DSSEP, Broward College, the Florida College System, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). Training Delivery: Responsible for conducting and delivering public safety training in classroom and hands-on settings (e.g., ethics, defensive tactics, patrol techniques, report writing, and Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) application); stays current with changes in Public Safety Officer/Florida law enforcement practices, procedures, and state regulations to ensure curriculum relevance. New Hire Training Academy: Develop, coordinate, and teach the Public Safety Officer (PSO) new hire training academy, including onboarding, core policies and procedures, patrol operations, communications/radio procedures, report writing, legal updates, customer service and de-escalation, emergency response, and required safety skills; administer assessments and remediation plans, document performance, and coordinate schedules, facilities, and subject matter instructors to ensure readiness for field training. Field Training Management: Oversee the department’s Field Training Officer (FTO) program, ensuring new hires successfully transition from the Public Safety Academy to active duty. Training Compliance & Certification: Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local training requirements; manage certification processes; and support staff through orientation, professional development, and continuing education programs. Compliance, Documentation & Records: Maintain accurate records of attendance, test scores, and training performance evaluations; ensure training documentation and activities comply with applicable accreditation standards; and participate in audits or accreditation activities, as needed. Training Needs Assessment & Planning: Conduct needs assessments in coordination with DSSEP leadership; build annual and quarterly training plans; and align training calendars with operational coverage, regulatory deadlines, and emerging risk trends. Training Evaluation & Continuous Improvement: Develop written and practical assessments; evaluate performance against defined competencies; analyze results to identify gaps; and update lesson plans and coaching strategies to improve learning outcomes. Learning Management & Training Resources: Maintain course rosters, electronic training files, and course materials; support learning management system (LMS) and classroom technology; and coordinate training space reservations and logistical needs. Training Equipment & Safety Readiness: Prepare, inspect, and maintain training equipment and supplies (e.g., inert training devices, protective gear, first aid training aids, radios, and AED trainers); verify safe setup and teardown; and report hazards or maintenance needs promptly. Campus Emergency Preparedness Critical Incident Drills: Assist the Emergency Management team in planning and executing high-stakes drills, including active shooter (ALICE/Run-Hide-Fight) and campus-wide evacuations. Stakeholder Education: Provide specialized safety training and "Emergency Quick Guide" orientations to students, faculty, and staff. Subject Matter Resource: Serve as a subject matter resource for specialized public safety training, including crisis intervention and de-escalation. Scenario-Based Simulations: Facilitate dynamic, scenario-based training simulations to reinforce decision-making, teamwork, and safety protocols during simulated emergencies. Training Safety: Enforce safety protocols during all training sessions and exercises. Liaison Duties: Serve as a liaison with other agencies, educational institutions, and college departments to coordinate joint training exercises and meet the training needs of personnel. After-Action Reviews (AAR) & Improvement Planning: Support the development of after-action reviews and corrective action plans following drills, exercises, and real-world incidents; track action items and assist with follow-up training to close identified gaps. Exercise Design & Incident Command Integration: Assist with exercise design (objectives, injects, controllers/evaluators, and communications plans) and reinforce Incident Command System (ICS) concepts to strengthen coordination across DSSEP and campus stakeholders. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of public safety operations, patrol practices, emergency response, and campus safety principles. Ability to design instruction using adult learning principles and deliver engaging, scenario-based training. Ability to evaluate performance, document results, and provide coaching/feedback to improve competency. Strong written communication skills for lesson plans, instructional guides, after-action reviews, and training documentation. Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with FTOs, subject matter experts, and campus partners. Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound judgment in high-stakes environments. Work Conditions Essential Personnel: May be required to respond during campus emergencies, suspended operations, or scheduled weekend drills. Physical Demands: Must be able to participate in field training exercises, which may involve patrolling on foot, climbing stairs, or demonstrating defensive tactics.
