Database Administration & Operations Tech Lead

The area ensures high availability, integrity, performance, and security of structured and unstructured data supporting critical business applications. It spans relational (SQL) and NoSQL platforms, addressing challenges such as version upgrades, patch management, capacity planning, data lifecycle management, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and security standards. The function also maintains robust backup, recovery, and disaster recovery capabilities, while continuously improving database reliability, automation, and operational maturity.</span><br><strong><em><br>This is you</em></strong></p><ul><li><p>6+ years of commercial experience in database administration</p></li><li><p>Expert-level experience with MS SQL, MySQL, Progress, MongoDB, Oracle, DB2 (administration, backup, patching)</p></li><li><p>Strong experience in performance tuning (execution plans, indexing, wait events, AWR/ASH, engine metrics)</p></li><li><p>Deep understanding of HA/DR architectures (AlwaysOn, Data Guard, log shipping, replication)</p></li><li><p>Expertise in TLS, certificates, and secure DB endpoint configuration</p></li><li><p>Skills in capacity planning, forecasting, and data growth modelling</p></li><li><p>Knowledge of backup technologies, snapshot-based recovery, and cross-site failover</p></li><li><p>Strong understanding of data security, encryption, auditing, masking, and privilege management</p></li><li><p>Familiarity with cloud-managed database services (Azure, GCP, AWS equivalents)</p></li><li><p>Observability/monitoring expertise for DB performance, alerting, and telemetry</p></li><li><p>Experience with license compliance and vendor-specific entitlement rules</p></li><li><p>Expertise in migration planning, version upgrades, and platform consolidation</p></li><li><p>Ability to mentor and lead L2 database analysts</p></li><li><p>Scripting capabilities (PowerShell, Python, Bash) for automation of routine DB operations</p></li><li><p>Strong people management skills for leading the DB admin L2 team</p></li></ul><p><strong><em>Nice-to-have skills</em></strong></p><ul><li><p>Experience with CI/CD pipelines for database deployment and management</p></li><li><p>Familiarity with Agile methodologies and cross-functional project coordination</p></li><li><p>Knowledge of containerisation technologies (Docker/Kubernetes) related to database environments</p></li></ul><p><strong><em>This is your role</em></strong></p><ul><li><p>Lead deployment, configuration, management, and optimisation of enterprise database instances (MS SQL, MySQL, Progress, MongoDB, Oracle, DB2)</p></li><li><p>Perform advanced backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures and maintain validated DR plans</p></li><li><p>Conduct performance tuning: execution plans, indexing strategies, query analysis, wait events, and resource bottlenecks</p></li><li><p>Drive version upgrades, patching, and vulnerability remediation, ensuring lifecycle management of database platforms</p></li><li><p>Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance across all database environments</p></li><li><p>Oversee encryption (TLS, TDE), secure driver configurations, and secure connectivity</p></li><li><p>Lead incident response and deep troubleshooting of database service outages and performance issues</p></li><li><p>Collaborate with application, infrastructure, storage, and cloud teams for seamless data availability</p></li><li><p>Maintain documentation of database architectures, operational procedures, and support models</p></li><li><p>Conduct regular database capacity, utilisation, and health reviews; propose optimisation initiatives</p></li><li><p>Support audits, compliance checks, and license reviews</p></li><li><p>Participate in governance, reporting, service reviews, and operational improvement initiatives</p></li><li><p>Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to L2 Database Analysts; organize an On-Call rota</p></li><li><p>Manage vendor escalations and coordinate with third-party support</p></li><li><p>Lead database migration and consolidation activities (on-prem → cloud or cross-platform)</p></li><li><p>Support business continuity planning and DR test execution, with post-test reporting</p></li><li><p>Oversee secure decommissioning of end-of-life database hardware and data sanitisation processes</p></li><li><p>Remote work with office visits as needed, generally up to twice a week</p></li><li><p>Candidates should be open to on-call rotation — approximately one week per month, rotating with more junior team members. On on-call days, the expectation is to have a laptop ready and be able to respond to incidents within roughly an hour. Incidents are expected to be rare.<em><br><br>At Avenga, everyone matters.
