O’Melveny has an immediate opening for a Conflicts Attorney based remotely within a reasonable commuting distance of any US O’Melveny office. The Conflicts Attorney is responsible for conflicts clearance review and analysis for firm-wide legal hires and new business, working directly with the General Counsel and Conflicts Manager, as well as with firm attorneys and conflicts analysts, to identify and resolve potential ethics and business conflict issues.
The salary range for this role is $155,000 - $175,000 and represents the firm’s good faith minimum and maximum range for this role at the time of posting. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location.
Responsibilities include:
Review and analyze complex conflict reports and exercise discretion and independent judgment to identify potential conflict of interest issues with new lateral hires, new business, and business development initiatives.
Utilize available internal and external databases to research conflicts of interest issues with respect to new business and conflicts information provided by a prospective incoming new hire/laterals.
Prepare communications to attorneys and administrators with detailed summaries, highlighting potential issues and required steps to resolve potential ethical and business-related conflicts of interest. Assist attorneys in resolving conflict issues as needed.
Review and draft engagement letters and any amendments, and conflicts waivers related to the Firm’s clearance of new clients, new matters, and lateral attorneys.
Work directly with firm attorneys, Administrators, the Office of the General Counsel, and members of the Conflicts & Engagement team, as necessary, to assist with conflict resolution through drafting and implementation of required screening procedures and obtaining waivers as required.
Maintain and monitor changes in ethics rules, ethics opinions, and case law regarding conflicts of interest as well as relevant procedures, policies, and practices.
Special projects and duties as assigned by Management.
Participate in providing coverage for conflict requests after business hours and on weekends as necessary.
Qualifications:
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and active U.S. bar admission in at least one state.
A minimum of three years’ relevant experience as a lateral conflicts attorney in a global law firm setting or at least three years as a general Conflicts Attorney with one year of cumulative experience related to the clearance of lateral hires.
Prior experience with InTapp Open, ethics wall, and business intake software a plus.
Excellent communication and professional interpersonal skills; strong customer service skills and ability to interact effectively with people at all organizational levels of the firm
Strong research skills; strong analytical and problem solving skills, strong attention to detail.
Self-starter who can organize and prioritize multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment; work under pressure and complete job assignments in an accurate and timely manner; respond appropriately to shifting demands.
Work independently, but able to escalate and communicate issues in a timely and effective manner.
Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively as part of a team and ability to lead, influence, and motivate others.
Able to maintain professional composure in challenging or difficult situations.
