POSITION PURPOSE/MISSION: To drive measurable reductions in energy consumption and operational costs by identifying technical opportunities, executing high-impact energy projects, and optimizing industrial systems across iron and steel manufacturing facilities. The Energy Engineer plays a critical role in supporting the plant’s energy strategy through detailed system evaluations, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and alignment with ISO 50001 energy management objectives. This role ensures that energy efficiency is embedded in day-to-day operations, capital projects, and long-term sustainability goals. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or related degree. Three years’ experience working on energy conservation projects and ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems. Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical industrial systems, such as: Thermal Processes, Compressed Air, Dust Collection, Air Make-up units, Pumps and Fans. Ability to understand/read utility bills, engineering drawings and process diagrams. Project Management skills in leading large multiple discipline projects. Analytical skills in analyzing data and providing solutions. Ability to provide team leadership and strong interpersonal skills in working with individuals and teams. Demonstrated critical-thinking and problem solving skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficient in the advanced features of Microsoft Office products. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience managing organization energy and utility use. Four years’ experience working on energy conservation projects and ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems. Prior experience in Continuous Improvement and/or Six Sigma projects. Experience with steel mill operations and maintenance. Skilled in a wide degree of creativity and latitude. MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES: Identify and recommend energy savings strategies to achieve more energy-efficient operation. Lead and execute energy assessments and audits across industrials systems and processes. Lead energy blitzes and treasure hunt campaigns within each plant. Work closely with all end-users in stake holding and building key relationships to seek opportunities for efficiencies. Support the Energy Manager to Outline the business’ utilities usage. Develop systems consolidating and universal energy tracking and reporting across the business. Set benchmarks for utility usage for each business within Charter Steel Develop processes to educate and train employees on energy efficiencies in respective areas. Lead multiple projects with a variety of teams internally and external to Charter with significant impacts to multiple areas. Support the Energy Manager to maintain the ISO 50001 Energy management system. Research alternative/renewable new technologies and determine their feasibility and cost effectiveness. Work with state and federal agencies to maximize training and resources available to improve energy efficiency. Follow Environmental, Quality and Safety Management System procedures and requirements.
