About the Role

On our redesigned 10-week immersive Summer Internship you’ll gain real experience, grow your confidence, and develop the skills and behaviours needed to thrive in a future Early Careers programme such as a 2027 Industrial Placement or Skill Development Programme.     Over 10 weeks you’ll work within our Risk function, contributing to impactful work and learning from expert colleagues. You’ll also take part in workshops, networking events, and activities designed to accelerate your development.  This internship is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact, understand Nationwide’s culture and build the foundation for a career that’s fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society.    Where you’ll be working You’ll spend the full 10‑week programme on‑site, five days per week at our Swindon office. This supports immersive learning, strong team integration, and your development into a confident future early‑career professional.   What you’ll be doing Our Risk function works across all key areas of risk that affect Nationwide and our ability to meet customer needs. We help deliver Nationwide’s strategy in a safe and sustainable way, providing expertise and constructive challenge to colleagues so we can support both current and future customers with confidence.  You’ll be working in either:  Credit Risk   You’ll join the Unsecured Credit Risk team, where you’ll help shape credit strategies for credit cards, personal loans and current accounts. You’ll use data and analytics to understand how we make lending decisions and ensure they meet responsible lending rules and Consumer Duty standards. Throughout the internship, you’ll work with teams across Product, IT, Operations, Marketing and specialist Risk areas to make sure our strategies work. You’ll build confidence in reading portfolio data, spotting early warning signs and understanding how customer behaviour, product design or economic changes can impact credit performance, learning how smart decisions help manage risk and keep customers protected.  Model Risk   You’ll join the Model Risk team, helping develop tools and analytics that identify and monitor nonfinancial risks, including those that affect customers directly. You’ll work on projects focused on regulatory compliance and customer vulnerability, designing and prototyping analytical tools that help the business spot emerging risks early. Throughout the internship, you’ll collaborate with data specialists and experienced analysts to explore new datasets, build dashboards and early warning indicators, and turn complex information into meaningful insights that support better customer protection.   You’ll gain hands on experience in analytics, tool development and data driven problem solving, working closely with teams across Model Risk, Compliance and Operational Risk. By the end, you’ll have practical experience building analytics that support nonfinancial risk management and a strong foundation for a future career in data, analytics or broader risk roles.    Operational Risk  You’ll join the Operational Risk team, where you’ll help make sure the Society understands and manages risks across areas like IT, Security, Data, AI, Third Party risk, Change and Operational Resilience. You’ll work with teams across the business and with key regulators such as the PRA and FCA, who expect strong, independent challenge from our Second Line of Defence. Throughout the internship, you’ll build practical skills and insight into how organisations stay safe and compliant in a fast changing world, especially in areas like cyber security. You’ll also develop strong stakeholder and communication skills, working with internal teams and regulators to support safe delivery of change, manage issues effectively, and ultimately help create great experiences for our customers.    Compliance & Regulatory Affairs  You’ll join the Compliance & Regulatory Affairs team, where you’ll help us understand new and changing regulations and make sure they’re applied safely across the whole customer journey. You’ll get involved in high profile projects, new products and services, and key customer impacting topics, offering support and challenge to ensure we meet regulatory expectations and deliver great outcomes for customers.   You’ll help track emerging regulation, support work on crosscutting issues like vulnerable customers, contribute to oversight of major strategic projects including Consumer Duty, assist with interactions with regulators, and use data to help keep customer outcomes front and centre. By the end, you’ll have built strong regulatory knowledge, stakeholder skills and hands on experience in a team that plays a crucial role in protecting customers and supporting Nationwide’s purpose.    Throughout the programme, you will: •    Work on meaningful tasks that contribute to your team’s goals •    Build baseline technical and professional skills relevant to the function you join •    Take part in structured development activities across the 10‑week programme •    Grow your understanding of Nationwide’s culture, expectations, and ways of working •    Demonstrate your aptitude, performance, and potential through real tasks and shadowing •    Build a professional network    About you We’re looking for students who:  •    Have a genuine interest in developing skills in Risk •    Are curious, ambitious, and proactive learners •    Are strong communicators with good attention to detail •    Enjoy solving problems and thinking creatively •    Thrive in a collaborative, high‑performance environment •    Can organise and take accountability for their work •    Want to make a positive difference for our customers and communities   Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together.
