Do you want to help students use anthropology to better understand today’s complex social and political issues?

University College Utrecht (UCU) welcomes applications from engaged lecturers in anthropology whose work focuses on contemporary and urgent issues within anthropology. We are particularly interested in candidates whose areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, themes of decoloniality; mobility, citizenship and diversity; power and inequality. Affinity with themes within the discipline of political science is an advantage.

Your job

The teaching responsibilities primarily include giving lectures and conducting seminars across various courses offered by the Anthropology track, grading assignments and exams, (co-)redesigning a course, and supervising students during their thesis writing process within the Anthropology and (where possible) Political Sciences track.

Furthermore, you will participate in student matching and outreach activities, and contribute to maintaining the quality of the track programme within the teaching team.

Your qualities

• Completed PhD degree in Social and/or Cultural Anthropology or near completion (thesis defense scheduled);
• a UTQ or proven experience in teaching at the Bachelor level;
• preferably an affinity with teaching in a Liberal Arts and Science setting;
• excellent knowledge of spoken and written English;
• an inspiring teaching style and a strong commitment to education and educational innovation;
• flexibility and team spirit.

Our offer

• a job for 0,5-0,55 fte;
• for the duration of 2 years;
• a working week of 20 - 24 hours and a gross monthly salary between € 4.728 and € 6.433 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 11 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));
• 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
• a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.

University College Utrecht (UCU) is an international Honours College of Utrecht University. It offers the undergraduate programme Liberal Arts & Sciences, in which students have complete freedom to compose their individual curriculum from courses in the humanities, sciences and social sciences. The classes are small, with about twenty students. The students live and study on campus, a close-knit community and vibrant hub of intellectual exploration and social engagement. UCU presently has around 750 students with close to 75 different nationalities.
