About the Role

We are currently working with a Local Authority in the South West who are looking for an interim Waste Management Contract and Compliance Lead to join their team.

The role will Lead the delivery and performance of high-value waste management contracts, ensuring services are compliant, efficient, and aligned with environmental and legislative priorities. You will manage and develop a specialist team while providing expert advice and driving service improvements across a complex, high-profile public service area.

 

Job: Waste Management Contract and Compliance Lead

Duration: 2 Months

Start date: ASAP

Rate: £300 per day via Umbrella, Inside IR35

Site presence: Hybrid – Site dependent

 

Role Details

  • Leading and developing a high-performing team responsible for waste contract management, compliance, and commissioning activities.
  • Managing a portfolio of high-value waste treatment and disposal contracts, ensuring services are delivered efficiently, compliantly, and to a high standard.
  • Acting as the council’s lead representative for key contracts, overseeing performance, approving spend, and driving continuous improvement.
  • Providing expert advice on waste legislation, policy, and best practice to senior leaders and key stakeholders.
  • Leading complex service improvement and transformation projects in response to new legislation and environmental priorities.
  • Monitoring contractor performance and compliance, identifying risks and implementing corrective actions where required.
  • Using data and insight to drive service improvements, enhance sustainability, and ensure delivery against key performance targets.
  • Representing the council at contract meetings, stakeholder forums, and regional/national groups, including deputising for senior leadership.

Requirements

  • A degree in a relevant field or substantial experience in commissioning, contract management, or a related discipline.
  • Strong experience managing large-scale, high-value contracts and budgets, with a focus on performance and value for money.
  • Proven leadership skills, with the ability to motivate, develop, and manage high-performing teams.
  • In-depth understanding of waste management, environmental legislation, and compliance requirements (or a closely related field).
  • Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and translate it into actionable insights.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with experience engaging a wide range of stakeholders in a political or public sector environment.
  • Experience delivering complex projects or programmes, managing risk and multiple priorities effectively.
  • Highly organised, with sound judgement and the ability to make informed decisions in a fast-paced, complex environment.
