Description

This is a non-tenure-track Lecturer position with a one-year appointment (with the possibility of renewal conditional on need and performance) effective Fall 2026. We seek one instructor to join Vanderbilt University’s Department of Medicine, Health, and Society, a large, interdisciplinary major designed to prepare the next generation of national and international health leaders—from doctors and nurses to economists, researchers, and policy makers. Instructors will be appointed to teach at the new Vanderbilt New York City campus, located in Chelsea.

Duties involve teaching one section of MHS-NYC 2550 What is Health? (and how do you get it)? each semester, supervising student internships, and attending weekly meetings with other instructors.

MHS-NYC 2250 is an interdisciplinary exploration of how health is defined, contested, and pursued across social, cultural, and policy domains, including infrastructure, activism, hospitals and clinics, politics, media, and popular discourse. Students use the city as a laboratory to analyze health as a social good, a business, and a moral imperative.

Qualifications

A PhD in the humanities, social sciences, an MD or degree in clinical specialties, or a related field, acquired no later than August 1, 2026. Experience with experiential education is preferred. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, but we expect the salary range to be $9,000 per course.

Application Instructions

Applications, including cover letter, CV, teaching statement, evidence of teaching effectiveness, course evaluations, and list of three references should be submitted. Candidates who advance in the process will be asked to submit three letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin on April 15, 2026.

Questions about the position should be directed to Jonathan Metzl, Jonathan.Metzl@Vanderbilt.edu. Chair of the Department of Medicine, Health, and Society
