About the Team
The Emissions and OBD Development (EMOD) team is part of the Electrified Propulsion division of HATCI. We advance propulsion efficiency and performance across Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis internal combustion and hybrid powertrains, directly shaping the refinement, competitiveness, and technological leadership of the vehicles our customers drive every day. EMOD leads testing and development of engine and electrified propulsion management systems, emissions and diagnostics calibration, and exploration of new technologies that enable next-generation propulsion solutions.
About the Role
We are looking for an innovative and highly motivated Vehicle Emissions & OBD Calibration Engineer to join our EMOD team in Superior Township, MI. In this role, you will help ensure our propulsion systems meet increasingly stringent emissions and OBD requirements while delivering exceptional performance and efficiency. This position provides hands-on opportunities to shape the next generation of internal combustion, hybrid, and electrified propulsion technologies.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Lead Engine Management System (EMS) mapping, calibration, and validation activities
Conduct EMS and OBD-II calibration/validation, including extreme ambient environmental testing
Contribute to new technology development aimed at meeting emissions regulations efficiently and cost-effectively
Support project execution through test planning, coordination, scheduling, and progress tracking
Provide deep technical expertise to resolve pre-production and post-production issues
Create and present compelling technical reports, results summaries, and program milestone updates
Support manufacturing, quality improvement, field investigations, and certification processes
Benchmark competitor ICE and hybrid propulsion systems
Travel domestically and internationally as needed (up to 15%)
WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE
Basic:
BS ME, EE or related
2+ years of direct automotive calibration experience (base engine or OBD-II)
Understanding of propulsion system fundamentals, including hybrid system operations
Experience with emissions testing, calibration methods, and vehicle test procedures
Working knowledge of communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Ethernet) and tools such as ETAS/INCA
Familiarity with vehicle emissions and OBD monitor system regulations
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Preferred
MS ME, EE or related preferred
4+ years of experience in emissions development, calibration, and validation
Experience with particulate matter (PM) emissions mitigation, including GPF calibration
Experience calibrating OBD-II features for mass-production launch
Background in calibration optimization and Design of Experiments (DoE)
Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink
