Site Reliability EngineerLevel: Mid–SeniorLocation: Gloucester (Hybrid)Function: Site Reliability Engineering / DevOpsSalary £40,000 – £65,000 (DOE) + bonus and benefitsAbout the RoleOur client operates at the sharp end of national security and digital intelligence, delivering mission-critical technology across highly sensitive environments. Their Gloucester-based team is scaling, driven by increasing demand from government and defence clients.This is a Site Reliability Engineering role with real impact. You are not maintaining low-value ops processes. You are engineering reliability into systems that matter, using automation, tooling, and strong software principles to reduce manual intervention and improve performance at scale.What You’ll Be DoingSupporting and improving critical services that underpin mission-facing applicationsDriving automation to eliminate repetitive operational work and reduce human interventionInstrumenting systems with monitoring and observability tooling, using data to improve reliability and performanceWorking closely with engineering teams to embed best practices in system design and architectureDiagnosing and resolving complex incidents across the full technology stackContributing to a broader SRE / DevOps community, sharing knowledge and improving standardsIdeal BackgroundExperience in software engineering, ideally with Java and web technologies (JavaScript, HTML)Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or OpenStack)Solid Linux and/or Windows command line experience (Bash, PowerShell)Exposure to distributed systems, microservices, and containerisation (Docker)Experience with monitoring and logging tools (e.g. ELK stack)Familiarity with databases such as Elasticsearch or MongoDBExperience with CI/CD or configuration management tools (Chef, Puppet)Proven ability to troubleshoot production issues across infrastructure and application layersUnderstanding of Agile environments and tooling (e.g. Jira)What You’ll Receive£40,000 – £65,000 base salary depending on experienceHybrid working model with flexibility built inOpportunity to work on high-impact, secure programmes with real-world outcomesAccess to complex engineering challenges not typically found in commercial environmentsStrong internal engineering culture with a focus on continuous improvement and innovationWho Should ApplyEngineers who want to move beyond traditional operations into true SRECandidates who enjoy solving complex reliability and scalability challengesIndividuals comfortable working in secure, high-trust environmentsPeople who value impact, ownership, and engineering depth over surface-level deliveryClearance & EligibilityDue to the nature of the work, candidates must be eligible for UK security clearance.
