Fohntech Group are looking for an Electrical Design Engineer to join their team in Belgium.

The Electrical Design Engineer will support the delivery of large-scale hyperscale data centre campuses, providing technically robust, standardised, and resilient electrical designs that meet strict client performance, availability, and operational requirements. The role focuses on repeatable design solutions, high-capacity power infrastructure, and close coordination with client, vendor, and construction teams.

Key Responsibilities

Hyperscale Electrical Design

  • Develop electrical designs for hyperscale data centre buildings and campuses from concept through IFC and as-built stages.
  • Deliver high-capacity and high-resilience electrical systems including:
  • Utility intake and on-site HV substations
  • MV/LV distribution architectures
  • Large-scale UPS and battery systems
  • Standby generation plants and fuel systems interfaces
  • EPMS, metering, and power quality monitoring
  • Apply and maintain standardised client design templates and basis-of-design documents.

Redundancy, Resilience & Capacity Planning

  • Design electrical systems to meet hyperscale redundancy strategies (N, N+1, 2N, 2N+1).
  • Support power density planning and future capacity expansion strategies.
  • Evaluate system performance, fault levels, selectivity, and short-circuit coordination.

Design Governance & Client Standards

  • Ensure designs fully comply with hyperscale client standards, technical specifications, and change control processes.
  • Support client design reviews, technical gateways, and approval milestones.
  • Manage deviations, concessions, and technical risk registers.

Multi-Discipline & Vendor Coordination

  • Coordinate with mechanical, CSA, ICT, BMS, fire, and commissioning teams to ensure integrated solutions.
  • Engage with OEMs and vendors (UPS, generators, switchgear) during design development.
  • Review vendor and specialist subcontractor designs for compliance and constructability.

Construction & Site Engineering Support

  • Provide ongoing technical support during construction, installation, and commissioning.
  • Respond to RFIs, technical queries, and site-driven design changes.
  • Attend site inspections, factory acceptance tests (FATs), and witness testing as required.

Testing, Commissioning & IST

  • Support development of commissioning strategies and integrated systems testing (IST).
  • Review test scripts and ensure alignment with client operational requirements.
  • Support phased energisation, building-by-building, and campus-wide handovers.

Value Engineering & Programme Support

  • Contribute to value engineering while protecting hyperscale performance and reliability requirements.
  • Support procurement strategies and long-lead equipment coordination.
  • Provide technical input into construction sequencing and programme planning.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of hyperscale electrical architectures and utility interfaces.
  • Experience with high-capacity power systems and campus-scale infrastructure.
  • Ability to work within strict client governance and change control environments.
  • Excellent coordination, documentation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong analytical and engineering judgement.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 4–8 years’ experience in hyperscale data centres or large-scale mission-critical projects.
  • Experience working with hyperscale clients, major contractors, or Tier 1 consultants.
  • Proficiency in BIM-led design environments (Revit, AutoCAD) and electrical analysis tools.
  • Working knowledge of standards such as IEC, BS, IEEE, NFPA, TIA-942, and Uptime Institute.
  • Chartered Engineer or actively working toward chartership desirable.

Personal Attributes

  • Detail-focused with a strong appreciation for standardisation and repeatability.
  • Confident engaging with demanding hyperscale clients and technical reviewers.
  • Calm, methodical, and solutions-driven under programme pressure.
  • Strong ownership mindset and pride in engineering quality.
