Apprenticeships and work experience

An apprenticeship is a paid job which offers hands-on work experience alongside training through a training provider, college, workplace or university.

They can be in a wide range of occupations, including Business Administration, Accounting, Social Care, ICT, Finance, Human Resources, Project Management and Highway Control.

We are committed to supporting people of all ages to develop their skills by creating apprenticeship opportunities wherever possible and developing our workforce for the future of the council.

Since the apprenticeship programme was launched, the council has successfully supported 144 apprentices – many of whom have since gone on to gain employment with the local authority.

We also support and encourage work experience across all directorates and departments for applicants of all ages and abilities.

The benefits

There are several benefits to becoming an apprentice with Bridgend County Borough Council, which include:

  • Getting hands-on experience in your chosen field of study
  • Getting paid to learn and study for a qualification
  • Gaining an industry recognised qualification
  • Improving your employability and furthering your career in your chosen field
  • Getting access to student discounts

Apprentices allow us as a local authority to recruit new talent who are keen to learn and enable individuals to develop professional skills and gain valuable experience while earning a real living wage and working towards an accredited qualification.

Work experience

We actively support and encourage work placements across all directorates and departments for applicants of all ages and abilities. We welcome enquiries from third sector organisations, schools, colleges, universities, Job Centre Plus and individuals.

There is an agreed process for securing work experience. Please do not approach services directly.

The application process

Contact us by email with:

  • your full name
  • your school, college, university or organisational information
  • the intended duration for the placement with start and finish dates
  • your preferred location including the directorate and department if known
  • a brief description of the type of work you are interested in
  • desired objectives for the placement

Human Resources will contact the right departmental manager to ask whether the request is possible. While departments are encouraged to accept placements, work demands may mean this is not possible.

Where a department agrees to a placement, they must make a risk assessment before the placement starts and an induction on the first day. It might be necessary for someone from the department to speak to you first to understand your interests and assess your suitability.

In circumstances where the placement cannot be accommodated, we will tell you as soon as possible.
