Associate / Principal Fire Engineer
Location: London, Bristol, Manchester or Birmingham (Hybrid with nationwide travel)
Role Type: Permanent, Full-time
Key Focus: Fire Engineering Design, Strategy, & Consultancy (Commercial Sector)
 
The Opportunity
 
Thomas Search are working on behalf of an independent consultancy to appoint an outstanding opportunity for an ambitious Fire Engineer to join a premier, independent multidisciplinary property and sustainability consultancy.
You will lead the transition to an in-house service line. Working alongside market-leading teams in building surveying, project management, and sustainability, you will deliver immediate, high-value instructions for an elite investor and corporate occupier client base.
This role offers a clear, structured pathway to a Director-level position within 2 to 3 years. You will be fully supported by our established leadership, marketing, and business development frameworks as you grow the capability.
 
Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert fire engineering design and strategy input across commercial, residential, and industrial sectors.
  • Incorporate fire engineering expertise into Technical Due Diligence (TDD) for acquisition and vendor surveys.
  • Advise on complex refurbishment, remediation, and redevelopment projects.
  • Deliver strategic Fire Risk Assessments (FRAs) and FRAEWs on a select, high-value basis.
  • Collaborate with established service line leaders to align fire engineering with wider business strategy.
  • Author high-quality technical and commercial reports for premium property funds and developers.
  • Build internal networks and support work-winning activities across regional offices.
  • Champion innovation and best-practice compliance in line with evolving fire safety legislation.
  • Degree: BEng/BSc or MSc in Fire Engineering, OR an alternative STEM degree (Civil, Mechanical, Structural) paired with a Level 4 Diploma in Fire Science/Design.
  • Professional Membership: Institution of Fire Engineers membership (MIFireE).
  • Chartership: Holding or actively working towards IEng or CEng status.
  • Consultancy: Minimum 3+ years of client-facing experience within an engineering consultancy environment.
  • Codes & Standards: Strong working knowledge of UK Building Regulations (Approved Document B), BS 9999, and BS 7974.
  • Software: Competence in interpreting Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Evacuation Modelling.
  • Design Frameworks: Clear understanding of how fire safety integrates into the RIBA Plan of Work.
