English Graduate Teaching Assistant
Primary SEN School – Gateshead

Are you an English graduate looking to build meaningful experience in education? We’re working with a supportive Primary SEN school in Gateshead seeking an English Graduate Teaching Assistant to help pupils develop confidence in reading, writing, and communication.

This role is ideal for someone who wants to make a real difference—supporting pupils with additional needs to access literacy in a way that works for them.

About the role

As an English Graduate Teaching Assistant, you will support literacy development across the school, working closely with teachers and SEND staff to adapt learning for pupils with a range of additional needs.

You’ll play a key role in helping children build foundational reading and writing skills, while also supporting their confidence, communication, and engagement in learning.

Key responsibilities

  • Supporting literacy-focused lessons across KS1 and KS2
  • Working with pupils on reading, phonics, comprehension, and written work
  • Delivering small-group and 1:1 interventions tailored to individual needs
  • Adapting resources to make learning accessible and engaging
  • Supporting pupils with communication, attention, and emotional regulation
  • Working closely with teachers and SEND staff to track and support progress

What we’re looking for

  • A degree in English, Literature, or a related subject
  • A genuine interest in supporting pupils with SEND
  • A calm, patient, and adaptable approach
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust with pupils
  • Experience working with young people is beneficial, but not essential
