Local Standards for Welding and Fabricating

WELDING:
• American National Standards Institute / American Welding Society D1.1 Structural Welding (Code – ANSI/AWS D1.1).
• American Society of Mechanical Engineers (Code – ASME sec. IX).

FABRICATING:
• American Society of Mechanical Engineers (Code – B31.3) Chemical Plant and Petroleum Refinery Piping./AWS D1.1).

SCAFFOLDING:
Currently not on the shortage occupation list, but all scaffolding is Cuplock, and was important for work with BP. All training for scaffold is in line with UK systems. Until such time as Scaffold is added to the Skilled Work Permit list, we are unable to offer any testing or scaffolding candidates into the UK.

Test FAQ’s

What type of tests can be carried out at the facility?

• Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG)
• Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG)
• Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
• Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
• Pipefitting tools and equipment to suit tailored test
• Fabricating tools and equipment to suit tailored test.

Do you have gas cutting equipment?

Yes we have Oxyfuel cutting equipment.

Can you design a test?

Ideally it would be your own specific test to match a job role requirement, however, yes we would use our CWI to design a test, whereby the learner would need to read and understanding a drawing and spec, be able to identify the correct materials on a rack, and be able to complete the test design. The CWI can also provide a written theory test in a classroom which provides added advantages of written understanding.

What support is available at the Facility?

Do you prep any of the tests?

All coupons are prepared beforehand for the client. All the tester has to do is put them together.

Do you have or need a machine shop?

We have access to a machine shop to bevel the stainless steel for the 2’ GTAW test.

Is there grinding and cutting materials available?

Yes, grinders, oxyfuel cutting sets, pipe cutters.

What materials can you get? What can’t you get?

We can get all standard materials plus Nickel and Chromium.

Is there NDT testing available?

Yes we have partner facilities available, with results returned inside a week (volume dependent).

Is there X-Ray available?

Yes, again these are sent away to the third party.

Can you test on our behalf?

We can currently conduct tests to American Standards, we would however suggest sending your own testers in the first trip. For Quality Assurance purposes, we would video each candidate and record all testing submissions.

What standards are typically tested there?

ASNT – American Standard for Non-destructive Testing.

What are potential bottle necks?

Weather.

Materials through Panama Canal.

Volume capacity for results.

What other testing can be carried out at Hydro Tech?

• Sand Blasting and painting.
• Rigging and Scaffold equipment is available, but Skilled Occupation codes are not available at this time for work permits in the UK.
• Scaffolding and Rigging equipment at Hydro Tech is UK standard, and was purchased for work at BP.
